Jodie Shepard and partner Cheryl Drewyer registered a two-over par 73 and are only three shots out of the lead at the midway point of the Women's Team Championship being held at Sea Palms Golf Resort in St. Simons.
Ginette Spinucci of Stone Mountain and Brenda Prictor of Marietta fired a one-under 70 on Monday and are two clear of two other groups. Shepard and Drewyer are in fourth position.
Shepard and Drewyer are competing in the Championship Flight. Jan Shirley of Newnan and Jean Franks of Peachtree City are participating in Flight One. Shirley and Franks opened with a round of 82 and are in ninth position.
Shepard and Drewyer began play at No.13 and shortly after making the turn, made back-to-back birdies at No.2 and No.3.
Shepard nailed a nine-wood to within five feet of the stick at No.2, then looked to Drewyer to help her correctly read the bermuda green birdie attempt.
They both were in position to make birdie at No.3, with Drewyer six feet out and Shepard only four feet away. Shepard made her attempt and the group appeared ready to be positioned at the top of the leaderboard.
But both made double-bogey at the next and are now three out. "We were right there until we found water at No.4," noted Shepard. Shepard had played the coure several times earlier this summer and praised the condition of the greens. "I've played it enough to realize where we should place the ball. The greens here are rolling very well," added Shepard.
The Women's Championship will conclude today as the format switches to a scramble.
