By the time you read this, the Philadelphia Phillies will have either won the 2008 World Series in five games or come tomorrow will have to travel to Tampa Bay for game six with the Rays.
Any slump that the Phillies were encountering ended at least for one night as they were 10-2 winners on a night where pitcher Joe Blanton did something that has not occurred in 34 years and that was hitting a home run.
The game concluded a day that saw my television set go non-stop as I watched the Falcons-Eagles’ game on FOX before my remote joined the party to change between the Steelers-Giants’ game on FOX and the Jaguars-Browns’ game on CBS.
The Falcons played hard and could have won while the Steelers made some mistakes and didn’t have enough duct tape to place on bodies.
As for the Jags and Browns, I have never been able to root for the Jacksonville club since their inception so anytime they lose is good for me while I I wanted to simply see the Browns win without tight end Kellen Winslow who exhibits little or no class whenever he opens his big mouth.
That game didn’t end right away, but the Steelers’ game ended only a few minutes before the series came on the tube and under cool conditions was able to start on time.
After the game, the television remained on for a little while longer (which should make Newnan Utilities happy for the extra coin) as I flicked to the NFL Network for the highlights show which ended around one a.m..
As for Monday, I think the remote gets another workout between Monday Night Football and game five of the series but if it is getting a workout again on Wednesday, it is because the Rays woke up the bats as Evan Longoria has been hitting like Eva and Carlos Pena has also had his struggles.
Otherwise, you will either see Bones, Til Death and something else on FOX or game six of the series from Tropicana Field or Cowbell Castle.
Should this series go the full seven games, you will miss a show called “Hole in the Wall” and another called “Kitchen Nightmare” on FOX.
For those who like ER or Gray’s Anatomy, those programs will be on the air regardless while CBS will have their fare of Survivor and CSI (the mothership).
As I have rambled about those of us who rely on the little box for the sports entertainment, think about the people in Philadelphia this past weekend who had to be in heaven as the center of the sports universe.
On Saturday, the people who boo Santa Claus were able to exert their feelings toward the New Jersey Devils who faced the Philadelphia Flyers in an NHL matchup while they had football and baseball on Sunday.
Another alternative in the city of brotherly love on Sunday night was a concert with The Who (yes they are still alive) not far from Citizens Bank Park.
While the Phillies could be in Tampa the remainder of the week, the other teams in Philadelphia will also be on road trips as the Flyers will play on Thursday, and the Eagles don’t play until Sunday.
The NBA season will open Wednesday for the Philadelphia 76’ers when they host the Toronto Raptors which means somewhere else will be the center of the sports universe.
As for the Tampa Bay area, the Buccaneers were in Dallas and the Lightning are on the road Thursday while the University of South Florida football team is at Cincinnati on ESPN.
Of course, if the Phillies won on Monday, all of this on my cracked crystal ball will be nothing more than a mirage.
