EDITORS NOTE: In today’s column, Stuart Crosby is writing about Region 3-AAAAA which will oppose Region 4-AAAAA in the first round of the postseason this year. In a future column, he will present a look at Region 6-AAAA which will face Northgate’s 5-AAAA this year in the opening round..
They have been called every term possible from “dominant” to “overrated,” but make no mistake about the Camden County Wildcats.
The Wildcats are good and appear headed to getting the top seed of Region 3-AAAAA again for the upcoming state playoffs.
After defeating the Groves Rebels last Friday, the Wildcats have an overall record of 6-0 and are currently 3-0 in the region which qualifies for a three-way tie with the Bradwell Institute Tigers and the Johnson Atomsmashers.
This Friday, the Wildcats and Atomsmashers will try to break a portion of the tie while the Tigers will face Savannah to either remain tied for first or second.
When the regular season scheduled is completed on November 7, the third place team from this group will make a trip to either Newnan, East Coweta or Chapel Hill as part of the playoff alignment set by the Georgia High School Association for this year.
Meanwhile, the other two will host first round matchups against one of the aforementioned threesome from Region 4-AAAAA as well as the fourth seed which is currently shared by the Westlake Lions and the Riverdale Raiders.
Besides Camden County, Bradwell Institute and Johnson, the fourth seed could come from a group that at the moment does not possess many victories in Jenkins, Groves, Windsor Forest, Beach and Savannah.
Beach, Jenkins and Windsor Forest have 1-2 records in the region while Groves and Savannah have 0-3 records.
Of the five “dregs” or “weak sisters’ of the region, the Savannah Blue Jackets are the less likely to get a playoff berth especially since they haven’t won more than three games in a given season over the last decade.
To make the situation worse for the Blue Jackets, their head coach Charley Brown, who was a wide receiver for the Washington Redskins and the Atlanta Falcons, was relieved of his duties last Monday.
The move really helped since they lost by 35 points last Friday night.
Stay tuned to see who gets that fourth seed since it promises to be a bumpy ride for them and the subsequent trip on Interstate 16.
Back to the big gun of the region in the Wildcats who have had some success against East Coweta and Newnan over the past few years in postseason.
This season, the Wildcats have answered the “overrated” charge with a credible non-region schedule as they defeated Norcross 21-6 on August 23 in the Corky Kell Classic at the Georgia Dome followed by wins over Columbia (FL) 31-0 and Hoover (AL) 44-16.
Norcross is currently 4-2 overall and 3-1 in Region 7-AAAAA while Columbia is also 4-2 and Hoover is 6-1 and 4-0 in Alabama’s Region 6A-6.
In other words, they have ruined a few parties for schools outside of the Coastal Empire and Coweta County.
Besides having a unique nickname, the Johnson Atomsmashers have had a unique season with a 4-2 overall mark as they prepare for that trek to Kingsland.
They have a four-game winning streak, however, the Atomsmashers have lost to Long County (A) and South Effingham (AAAA) before starting their streak.
After the Camden County game, Johnson will face Windsor Forest, Beach and Savannah to complete their regular season and they could make the playoffs.
As for the Bradwell Tigers, who lost to the East Coweta Indians in a playoff game a few years ago, narrowly lost to Houston County 20-16 early in the campaign and have defeated the teams that should go down.
Since it appears the fourth seed will go to a team which is not going to win more than four or five games I can only say nothing.
