Classifications to change for Coweta teams in 2012-13

From Staff Reports

sports@newnan.com

When the 2012-13 school year begins next fall, all three local Georgia High School Association schools will compete in new classifications..

Newnan and East Coweta, the two largest schools in Coweta County, have been placed in Class AAAAAA, while Northgate will move up to Class AAAAA.

It will be the first time ever the Georgia High School Association has used six classifications.

According to enrollment figures released by the GHSA, East Coweta is the ninth largest high school in the state with 2,143 students.

Newnan is expected to begin the school year with 1,845 students.

This fall, Newnan and East Coweta both made the playoffs in football while competing in Region 2-AAAAA.

Their softball and volleyball teams also made it to the state tournament, including East Coweta's seventh straight trip to the Elite 8.

Mill Creek has the largest number of students with 2,766 students.

Morrow, in Clayton County, is the smallest Class AAAAAA with 1,431 students.

Northgate jumps to Class AAAAA with an enrollment of 1,384, making it the eighth largest school in that classification.

This fall, Northgate won state titles in softball and cheerleading. It's football team just completed its best season ever with an 11-1 record.

The Vikings volleyball team also earned a spot at state

Allatoona has the largest Class AAAAA enrollment with 1,426. Dunwoody is the smallest Class AAAAA school with 1,124 students.

The next order of business by the Georgia High School Association is placing the schools in new regions with in each classification.

The Georgia High School Association was expected to release the new information on classification realignment last week, but that vote was delayed a week so it could closely examine numbers based on special needs students.

If you have nothing against Newnan or EC, then please ignore a random comment here or there that does not mirror the sentiment of the vast majority. It is disheartening to read vicious comments week in and week out about any of the Coweta schools. This is not the normal all in fun "trash talking,” and saying “I am tired of them…” just validates what is being said. One or two bad apples do not have to spoil the whole bunch. Just saying…..

Why the Hate of Newnan?

Northgate is a fine team and were very gracious. I do not understand why there is so much hatred of Newnan and East Coweta. Your girls sports are off the charts. Its very hard to win a championship in football.

NG Alum, NG was 2A back in the day. It was an exciting team no doubt, and the 2004 was exciting as well ... but, tip your hat to the 2011 squad, they deserve the mantel of the best ever at NG! Just the way it is.

Makes a lot of sense...

It actually does make a lot of sense to divide the schools evenly. The only problem with that is by doing that it may make Northgate a Title I school. With all that money on that end I don't think they would have that. Also, good point Cardinal about Tucker & Sandy Creek, but NG is no place near them. They win state titles in football..not go crazy about losing in the 2nd round.

have seen this possible region for Ngate before. Makes no sense. Starrs Mill, Whitewater, McIntosh, and Creekside will all be AAAAA. These are all closer to Northgate and should be region rivals for years. The Clayton county thing isn't right.

Imagine that. On the Mark thinks the Cougars are not any good. Different article same old story. The only ones worried about these schools playing one another are the ones who do not play. Not sure why it is so difficult to be supportive of all three schools but I guess it makes you feel better to bully high school kids.

really don't worry about Northgate, where would you get that idea from.

It's time to upgrade our high schools

11/22/2011

Link To This Comment

When one looks at the progress Northgate has made being a manageable size high school, it is time to add a forth high school. If the present three schools were equally populated we would have 1,791 in each high school. With four schools the population would be 1,343 for each school and all four would be 5-A's. That would better balance the logistics and provide for growth and give us a more accurate measure of performance in all areas for comparison -- academnics and athletics. This type of long range planning is another reason to keep SPLOST.

Why does EC and Newnan worry about NG football so much? Re-draw the school zones and make each school have equal attendance. There is a reason there are six classes.

Football Fan is an idiot. What they are not willing to realize, yet, is the power and quailtiy of the athletics is moving to the east side of this county and the cuga's will be a "www.memory" in a few short years. The king is dead.

Lucky for Northgate

Lucky for N'gate they stayed out of EC and Newnan's class...they'll be the 8th largest school in their class and still cant win 2 playoff games...by staying in a smaller class, they wont have to play the real football schools and get humiliated

Round of 16 better than Round of 8?

11/22/2011

Just how does making it to Round 2 qualify as being the best year ever for the Vikings when they went to QtrFinals in 2000?
Give us old alumni a little credit.
And I guess Northgate will not be in Newnan and EC region based on this story. So, I guess we need to play them non-region. GO VIKINGS!
