Vikings keep playoff hopes alive

The Northgate Vikings rolled to a 12-2 victory over Mundy’s Mill in Region 4-AAAAA action.

Northgate picked up a strong pitching performance from Robert Massenburg, who finished off Mundy’s Mill in six innings.

Massenburg allowed just one hit and didn’t give up an unearned run against the Tigers en route to the victory. Massenburg finished the game with seven strikeouts and just three walks.

Buddy Green lead the Vikings 12 hit attack as the Viking held on to the fourth and final region playoff spot en route to the win. Green finished the game with a 2-for-4 performance and for RBIs.

Northgate improved its record to 16-7 overall and 13-5 overall.

Andrew Burden was 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Armond Upshaw also drove in two runs.

Tyler Dalhberg, who went 2-for-4, and Massenburg also drove in a run.

The Vikings broke the game open with four runs in the top of the first.

Upshaw pounded out a double to open the Vikings offensive flood gates in the bottom of the first.

Massenburg also added his RBI in the inning.

Green added to the Vikings’ side of the scoreboard in the third when he driove in Upshaw and Jeffery Ginn with a double to extend the score to 6-0.

The Tigers cut the lead to 6-2 with their only runs of the game in the top of the fourth when two runs crossed the plate.

Northgate put the game out of reach in the fifth when it extended its lead to 10-2. Upshaw reached on a walk in the inning, and Ginn followed one batter later with a single. Massenburg was hit by a pitch in the inning and Green singled and also picked up an RBI.

The Vikings ended the game by the 10-run mercy rule in the top of the sixth when Ginn and Connor Wilson hit reached base and scored.

Northgate closes out its regular season with two more games starting today at 5 p.m. against Creekside. The Vikings then hit the road for a contest at Drew at 6 p.m.
