U-17 Lady Cannons win

By Tony Jones

The Times-Herald

The U-17 Coweta Lady Cannons traveled to Atlanta on Sunday afternoon and secured a 4-2 victory over the Top Hat Soccer Club.

The Cannons took control of the contest early, registering three unanswered goals in the opening half, while holding their opponents off the board.

Kelly Hindman was the catalyst behind the first goal, 19 minutes into the match. Hindman played a ball out of the back to a hustling Deanna Upchurch, who then located Meaghan Robinson.

The ability of Hindman and Upchurch to see the field in front of them gave Robinson an opportunity on the breakaway that Robinson wasn't about to waste as she gave her team a 1-0 lead.

Shortly after taking the lead, center midfielder Carly Moser was injured on a hard foul and was unable to return to the game. Moser’s teammates immediately rallied, scoring twice in the next 10 minutes.

The first of the two scores went to Upchurch, assisted by Shelby Stanfield. The Cannons then quickly padded their 2-0 lead on a goal by Stanfield with an assist credited to Robinson.

In an attempt to gain momentum, the Hatters tallied their first goal early in the second half, cutting the deficit to 3-1. But the Cannons answered back on a corner kick by Emily Lauzon to a waiting Stanfield, who volleyed it past the keeper.

The Hatters did add a goal in the 85th minute, but when the final whistle blew, the Cannons had their 4-2 victory.

The defense of Hindman, Amy Bell, Macy Rye, and Rebbecca Westbrook gave an outstanding performance all afternoon in support of keeper Brianna O' Sullivan.

O’Sullivan made some spectacular saves to help the Cannons cause, totaling 11 in the victory.

The U-17 Cannons now have a record of 2-1 on the season and in three games have scored 12 goals while yielding only six.

The Lady Cannons will play their next game against a team from the Atlanta Fire Soccer Club on Saturday at the Whitlock Soccer Complex at 9:00 a.m.
