Northgate freshman Justin Moore scored in the 100 backstroke.

FROM STAFF REPORTS sports@newnan.com Justin Moore and Nick Hogsed took a step toward putting Coweta County swimmers on the map at this year's Georgia High School Association Championships. Moore, a freshman at Northgate, finished sixth in the 100-yard backstroke during the Class AAAA-A meet with his second personal-best time in as many days.
After swimming a time of 53.89 seconds in the preliminaries, Moore came in nearly a second faster on Saturday, touching the wall at 52.83 while among just a pair of ninth graders to reach the event finals. Moore also won the 'B' finals of the Class AAAA-A 100-freestyle, comprised of the ninth through 16th finishers in preliminaries. The effort allowed the freshman to finish ninth overall in 47.75, four seconds ahead of his best time during the regular season. His efforts gave Northgate 21 1/2 points, enough to finish 27th among 46 competing schools. Just a sophomore, Hogsed came close to reaching the first state final of his high school career. The East Coweta standout finished 19th in the 200 individual medley with a personal-best time of 2:00.26. The cutoff for the B-finals was 1:59.02. Hogsed would have also qualified for the B-finals in the 500 freestyle during a swim of 4:47.17 for the 14th fastest time in Class AAAAA. But he was called for a false start that disqualified him from the event. This season, Hogsed qualified in all 11 possible events for state, including eight individual swims. The GHSA allows a swimmer to compete in a maximum of two relay and two individual events at the state level. Five of the county's seven individual state qualifiers from this season will continue varsity careers in the pool next year. Juniors Ashley Delgado and Kelsey Taliaferro competed for the Lady Indians, while freshman Delaney Wallace made her first trip to the Class AAAA-A meet for Northgate. East Coweta senior Michael Dean earned a personal-best time of 23.06 in the 50 freestyle. Newnan's Zach Ponce also closed out his varsity career at the Class AAAAA meet. Each made their first individual appearance at Georgia Tech, having competed both last weekend and in previous years in relay competition. East Coweta and Northgate lineups had the maximum three boys and three girls relays competing in Friday's state preliminaries. Newnan qualified both of its 200 freestyle relays. ••• (Editor's Note: East Coweta's Nick Hogsed was misidentified in a story that ran in Sunday's paper. We regret the error.)
