The Summit Family YMCA Men's USTA 3.5 tennis team captured a Southern Sectional Championship in Birmingham last week, while now advancing to the USTA nationals this fall.
The team, captained by Ron Young and Sean Rogin defeated a group from Louisville, Ky., 3-2.
During the sectional tournament held July 24-27, the Summit Family lineup went undefeated in five matches, sweeping group play against teams from Memphis, Shreveport, La., Greenville, S.C., and Anniston, Ala., to advance to the finals.
The Summit Family team finished its league play with an 11-1 record before advancing through the USTA 3.5 state tournament to reach the sectionals. The USTA 3.5 men's National Championships will be held from Oct. 29-31 in Tuscon, Ariz.
Summit team members also include Donovan Gossett, Taylor Josey, Steve Johnson, Tim Mitchell, Kipp Orme, Barry Bierig, Sean Hulz and Steve Saiman.
Meanwhile, SummerGrove's 4.0 team, which also advanced to the Southern Sectional Championships, began play on Thursday in its tournament, going 1-1 during the first day of play.
This year's sectionals drew the top 200 teams of nearly 2,000 players from throughout Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee.
The teams, which represent various clubs, parks, recreational departments and organizations, have finished at the top of their local leagues and are now vying for a chance to represent USTA Southern at the national championships, where the No. 1 recreational tennis team in the country will be crowned.
