Sieg takes his first checkered flag at New Senoia Raceway

FROM STAFF REPORTS sports@newnan.com SENOIA -- Decatur's Ryan Sieg passed Dacula driver Russell Fleeman with 33 laps remaining and held on for his first-ever victory in the Georgia Asphalt Series during Saturday's running of the Southern Crescent 100 at New Senoia Raceway. Sieg, in his S&W Towing racer, charged from his starting position in ninth place to the front, racing side by side with Fleeman for several laps before finally taking the lead for good.
Hometown driver Bubba Pollard finished third on the familiar 3/8th mile oval, with rookie drivers Max Gresham of Griffin and T.J. Reaid of Acworth finishing fourth and fifth respectively. Reaid set Saturday's pole with a blistering 14.185 second lap winning the Bearden Oil Company - Sunoco Racing Fuels Pole Award. Reaid drew a 4, moving Fleeman to the inside pole position. Fleeman, in his US Auto Sales racer, led the first 77 laps but had several challenges for the lead from both Gresham of Griffin and Newnan's Roger Delp. An accident on the back straight away involved several drivers including Delp, however, opening a hole for Sieg to challenge and eventually pull in front. "This win feels excellent," said Sieg. "The car was great and the Hamner Racing Engine was top notch." Beau Slocomb of Forsyth, who started in the back, due to mechanical problems during qualifying, had a solid run to finish seventh. Veteran driver Ronnie Sanders of Fayetteville, finished 8th and Sharpsburg driver Tony Clark finished 10th. Zach Holloway of Newnan and Bobby East of Rockmart made their first starts of 2008 with the GAS Series. The GAS series returns to action on July 3, at Peach State Speedway in Jefferson for the Toyota Tundra 125. Racing starts at 7:30 p.m.. Peach State Speedway is located of I-85 at Exit 140. The local classes will also compete and a fireworks display will folow the race. For more information about the GAS Series, log onto www.georgiaasphaltseries.com.
