David Singleton's goal heading into Friday's running preliminaries at the Georgia High School Association Boys State Track Meet in Jefferson was simple.
"We don't want to hold anything back," he said this week during practice. "We want to have our best meet of the year."
A day after teammate Willie Holloway landed a state shot-put title in Class AAAAA, Singleton qualified for today's finals in the 110-meter high hurdles and will now add more to the Indians' overall point total.
How much, however, depends on today's finish.
Singleton qualified seventh overall in the event in 14.75, a hair slower than his school record of 14.4 from earlier this season.
It came with a bit of anxiousness, though, as the East Coweta standout clipped his first three hurdles while trying to get out in front.
"He got out there fast and clipped the first three. He stayed in there, though," said Indians coach Trace Overton. "Getting to the finals, that's what it's all about."
Singleton will now compete today at approximately 2:25 p.m. Today's running finals will be streamed live on the internet at ghsa.tv.
In Thursday's late field events, Newnan senior Jalen Bolton finished 12th in the Class AAAAA long jump at 21-3/4 with eight athletes separated between 21 and 22 feet.
