Newnan’s swim team continued to drop times heading into this weekend’s final meet of the regular season.
On Saturday, both lineups scored more than 350 points apiece en route to a second-place finish at the Clayton County Invitational, which featured 14 schools in competition at the Lundquist Aquatics Center.
Both East Coweta and Northgate were scheduled to swim at the annual Clarke-Oconee Invitational in Athens last weekend. All three county schools will now prepare for ECHS’s host Tribal Challenge at the Summit YMCA.
At least seven other schools are scheduled to attend Saturday’s meet, which is the last chance to add state qualifying times for next month’s GHSA Swimming Championships.
Last weekend, the Cougars scored 484 points to lead a 845-point effort while outdistancing LaGrange (801) for second place overall behind only Woodstock (1385 1/2). Columbus (706 1/2) and Northside (568) rounded out the top five.
Courteney Darrow’s school record-setting time in the 200 IM led the Lady Cougars (361 points) while placing first in 2:42.17. Darrow took more than three seconds off her previous personal best.
Hunter Spradlin led Newnan’s boys with a second-place finish in the 200 freestyle in 2:10.76 while also anchoring a third-place effort in the 200 medley relay while joining junior Drew Mask, sophomore Harrison Pearson and senior Reven Hutzelman.
Pearson, Spradlin and Mask helped add a fourth-place effort in the 200 freestyle relay in 1:43.12, led by senior Johnny Jorgensen’s anchor time of 25.40. Newnan’s ‘B’ relay of sophomore Jake Roquemore, freshman Gray Gaude, sophomore Michael Durant and Hutzelman scored with an eighth-place effort.
Multiple Cougar relays also scored in the 400 freestyle led by a fourth-place finish by a team of sophomore Caleb Schenck, Gaude, sophomore Andrew Cowe and junior Connor France. Roquemore, Ethan Hutchison, Jared McKenzie and Powell placed seventh.
Spradlin and Schenck each had pair of top-five individual swims.  Schenck finished third in the 500 freestyle and fifth in the 200 IM just ahead of France, who placed sixth. Spradlin added a fourth-place effort in the 500.
Hutzelman and Powell gave Newnan’s boys a pair of top-five efforts in the 100 butterfly. Hutzelman placed second in 1:04.92 and Powell was fifth.
Mask led four Cougar scorers in the 100 freestyle while finishing seventh. Hutzelman (11th), Gaude (13th) and Durant (15th) were the others. Newnan’s boys also had four scorers in the 100 breaststroke — France (6th), Pearson (8th), Powell (12th) and Roquemore (19th).
Mask also placed eighth in the 100 backstroke, where Durant (12th) and Cowe (18th) also added scoring swims.
Gaude also was seventh behind Spradlin in the 200 freestyle while taking five seconds off his previous best time. Cowe scored by finishing 11th.
The Lady Cougars also turned in multiple personal-best times while led by Darrow, who also placed fourth in the 100 backstroke among three Newnan scorers. Shelby Stillwell finished 11th in the event and also added a personal-best mark of 1:25.55 by placing 10th in the 100 butterfly after taking seven seconds off her time. Kerrie Head placed 12th in the backstroke.
Darrow, Stillwell, Jessica Monroe and Jacqueline Witt placed sixth in the 200 freestyle relay.
Along with Stillwell, Kaylee Wagstaff placed 11th in the butterfly, but turned in her best finish in the 200 IM, placing sixth behind Darrow.
Witt had two top-six finishes for the Lady Cougars while finishing fifth in the 200 freestyle among two Newnan scorers. Anna Bonomi finished eighth and also led three Lady Cougar scorers in the 100 breaststroke with another eighth-place effort. Hannah Haynes and Kimber Brown were 10th and 12th, respectively.
Witt and Monroe were fourth and fifth, respectively, in the 500 freestyle. Monroe also scored in the 50 freestyle, placing 19th.
