Locals lose ground at Georgia Open

By Tony Jones

The Times-Herald

ADAIRSVILLE -- Troy Bartkowicz was hoping to make a major move on Saturday afternoon in the third round of the Georgia Open here at Barnsley Gardens.

The Canongate I golfer entered the day at four-under for the tournament and only three shots out of the lead but his one-over total on Saturday likely put an end to any hope of winning the prestigious event.

When Bartkowicz did make birdie, a bogey seemed to follow one hole later.

Bartkowicz made birdie at No.4 but fell back to even for the day with a bogey at No.5. He made birdie again at No. 7, but fell back to even for his round with a another bogey at No.8.

After a 47-minute rain delay with Bartkowicz sitting at No.18, he was able to complete a round of 1-over 73.

Bartkowicz, who made bogey at No.15, is traditionally a birdie machine who feeds on the par fives. That wasn't the case on this day as he was able to birdie only one of the par 5s. "I had my chances but I didn't take advantage of the par 5s. They have to be birdied," noted the golfer who is currently tied for 11th.

Orchard Hills professional Wyatt Detmer also lost ground and will look to climb up the ladder on Sunday. Detmer carded a four-over 76, but made the turn with a one-under 35.

Detmer played his final five holes at four-over. "I just couldn't find the clubhouse fast enough. The final holes were costly. I have to do a better job with them tomorrow," admitted Detmer.

His back nine troubles begin at No.10 when Detmer drove right into the trees and made double. Detmer would briefly recover but then find more trouble at No.15 (rough), No.17 (missed the green left), and No.18 (water).

Detmer chipped to within three feet at No.12 to set up birdie and made a birdie three at the difficult No.16.

"I was proud of the birdie at No.16 because no matter what, you never forget about having to play those final two holes," he said.

"They remain on your mind the entire time," noted the golfer.

Bryant Odoms of St. Simons holds the tournament lead. Odoms is 10 under and leads Thomas Baker of Canton by two shots. Baker carded a tournament low 65 on Saturday, registering an unfathomable 10 birdies. First and second round leader Roberto Castro is three shots back.
