Prior to the start of the boys final of the Coweta County Middle School Athletic League soccer playoffs Thursday at Henry Seldon Field, there was one certainty involving the Lee Timberwolves and the East Coweta Indians.
The winner was destined for the first title in the history of their respective programs.
This year, the honor went to the Timberwolves, who made a second half goal by Stephen Marlow stand throughout for a 1-0 victory.
The win by Lee ends their season at 7-4-2 while East Coweta also finished with an identical record.
The first half of the match was concentrated on solid defense by the two teams as well the play of goalies Bailey Hall of the Indians and Ryan Ciatsko of the Timberwolves with both making key saves to keep the match scoreless throughout the first half.
Hall proved to be human as Lee scored the lone goal of the match when Marlow drilled a shot past East Coweta's keeper with 15:39 remaining in the second half.
Despite the one goal, both keeper continued to deny scores to the opposition with key saves over the balance of the second half.
In the girls finale, the Lee Lady Timberwolves hope of an undefeated season and a successful defense of their 2007 championship were dashed, as the Madras Lady Eagles won the 2008 title with a 2-1 victory.
Ironically, Lee who finished 11-1 this season, defeated Madras (10-2) in last year's final in overtime to claim the trophy.
The match was scoreless throughout the first half, despite numerous attempts to get on the board by the Lady Timberwolves. Madras keeper Rebecca Whitlock denied all of them before halftime, while posting eight saves.
With five seconds remaining in the first half, the Lady Timberwolves committed a foul and from the right side of the field, Julie Whatley of the Lady Eagles drilled a shot past Lee keeper Cheyenne Balliew for the first goal of the evening.
Lee tried to rally a number of times in the second but Whitlock was like a vacuum cleaner in goal as the ball seemed to find her in the net.
Madras had few scoring opportunities in the second half, but received a much-needed second goal from Hannah Hudson, who converted from the left side of the field with 14:58 remaining in regulation to put further pressure on Lee.
The Lady Timberwolves finally converted with 3:51 remaining in the match as Micayla Crenshaw put home a shot in front of a crowd of Lady Eagles in front of the goal.
Lee narrowly missed a pair of opportunities late in the match but the Madras defense clamped down as well as more solid efforts by Whitlock.

Madras' goalie, the Whatley sisters and the 14 other players who played on the Madras field during the CCMSAL championship game beat Lee. Luck had nothing to do with it. Unlike Lee, the Madras coach actually has enough respect for his players to play them ALL during the game. Give credit where credit is due. Lee beat Madras at every other match up this season, but Madras beat Lee for the trophy and bragging rights. The exact opposite of last year's season.

For the record, Lee beat Madras in the preseason tournament and then twice during the regular season...that makes 3 loses! Madras' goalie single handledly defeated our girls in the final game. Lee had WAY more scoring opportunities. Madras got lucky!

In regards to "Heartbreaking", for the record, Lee beat Madras twice in the regular season, not three times. At the finals, they may have have "dominated the field" in the second half, but they couldn't close when it counted. Take your "Real county champs" home to cry on your shoulder! Way to go Madras!!!

Do you think these people posting these previous comments ever considered that they should feel fortunate their middle school aged kids even get their names and pictures in the paper? It's middle-school people. It's not Notre Dame football.

Why isn't there a team photo of the Champion teams instead of several individual photos? This would have been a great opportunity to congratulate the kids as well as promote soccer in our county!! Please try to do better with the next championship team!

It would have been nice to see a better picture of the Lee boys or maybe a team photo. Pretty disappointing photography to say the least.

It is absolutely HEARTBREAKING when your team has a perfect record....beats the same team 3 times and then loses the final. The other team gets to call themselves "County Champs." It was a great game, but Madras got a couple of lucky breaks. Lee dominated the field! Lady Timberwolves are the REAL county champs!! GREAT SEASON GIRLS!!!

I think it's sad that there were less (not to mention smaller) pictures of the LEE boys than of the Madras girls. Not only that, these teams were expecting TEAM pictures similar to last years to be printed in the paper. Furthermore, let's also not forget the coaches who worked tirelessly with these teams to pull off the wins and their names were NOT even mentioned! PITIFUL. But that's just my opinion.

The Second Goal for the Madras Lady Eagles was made my Amber Whatley #11 not Hannah Hudson. Might want to correct this error.
