Lady Cougars, Gresham second at Pike Invitational

By Sports Staff

The Times-Herald

ZEBULON -- The Newnan and East Coweta cross country squads returned to action on Saturday morning in the Pike County Invitational.

The Newnan girls, paced by senior Elizabeth Gresham, brought home a second place finish. Gresham finished fifth on the individual side with a time of 22 minutes and 30 seconds.

Marietta won the girls and boys titles. Newnan was second on the girls side, fourth in the boys race. East Coweta took fourth in girls and seventh in boys action.

The 10th place showing of Sandy Gamino (23:56) gave the Lady Cougars two top-10 finishers. Just behind Gamino were Cesilly Skinner (11th, 24:26), Ashley Quesinberry (12th, 24:46), and Daniella Galvin (14th, 25:29). Lady Cougar Kristen Adams was 24th.

The Cougars were led by Jonathan Ballantyne (9th, 18:04) and William Pike (11th, 18:24). Pike came out strong, led after mile one, but wasn't able to sustain his early pace. Ballantyne ran yet another textbook race.

Newnan's Ben Harvey was 28th and Will Sweet finished 29th. Cougar head coach Shaun Dailey took time to brag on the showing by Harvey. "We had an opening in the lineup today and Ben took advantage of the opportunity."

Dailey said the Pike County layout was difficult. "The times were slow and the course was tough. It was constructed to replicate the state course at Carrollton."

The East Coweta girls were led by Lauren Ward (13th, 24:50). Cayce Seldon finished 18th (25:56).

James Dodds was the top Indian finisher. Dodds was 20th, hitting the line at 19:31. Nathan Rawal was 24th (19:48), Mark Singleton 26th (19:50), and Logan Dorsen 40th (20:41).
