Heritage School wins shootout against Mt. Vernon, 54-42

Heritage School head coach Kevin Prisant felt this week that it would take holding Mt. Vernon to under three touchdowns in order for the Hawks to stay undefeated.

That simply wasn't going to happen Friday at home.

But the end result was still just as satisfying as it's been all season.

Heritage School gave away a 16-point lead in the first half, but managed to get it back between the final two quarters of play in a wild 54-42 victory over a young, yet equally dangerous Mustangs team.

Junior Candler Rich rushed for 194 yards and two touchdowns on 24 carries, adding a third touchdown on a fumble recovery on defense as the Heritage School improved to 3-0 for the first time in the program's short six-year history.

But again, the All-State runner had plenty of help.

Hawks junior quarterback Joe Bonner finished 4 of 6 passing for 114 yards and a touchdown pass to tight end Tyler Henson on the first play of the game.

Bonner also ran for two scores for the second consecutive week.

Heritage School fullback Dalton Trammell finished with 66 yards and teammate David Bready had five carries, including a touchdown run, for 60 yards rushing.

Defensively, Bready also had two clutch plays, setting up Rich's 70-yard fumble return by instigating the turnover that gave the Hawks an early 14-6 lead.

Bready, a sophomore, then added the first of two consecutive Heritage School interceptions that led to go-ahead scores in the third quarter. The ensuing drive, ignited by a big run by fullback Dalton Trammell, set up Rich's two-yard touchdown for a 40-35 lead.

Rich then intercepted another Mount Vernon pass that led to another Hawks score, this time by Bready.

The drive was keyed on a wild play where the ball went in and out of the hands of three Heritage School players before being corralled inside the Mustang 20-yard line. Bready then carried it in from 17-yards out to make it 47-35 with seven minutes left in the game.

Mount Vernon, led by sophomore quarterback Elijah Burdette, responded with a touchdown drive that saw Burdette carry the ball every play, including a final run from 10 yards, to make it 47-42 Hawks.

But with just under three minutes left, Rich put the game away on a 60-yard run. The Heritage School defense then forced Mount Vernon to turn it over on downs, before running out the clock.

Early on, Heritage School built a lead as big as 28-12 in the first half only to see the Mustangs score three times in a five-minute span to tie it going into halftime. A Mount Vernon touchdown pass from Burdette to freshman Mikell Lands spawned into a fumble return on the ensuing kickoff when a reverse exchange by Hawks returners was bobbled. Again Burdette and Lands connected from 21 yards to make it 28-25.

Mount Vernon eventually kicked a field goal on the final play of the half to tie the game at 28 going into the break.
