The Heritage Middle School football team build up a sizable lead last week against Arlington Christian and managed to hold off a comeback by the Eagles late in a 45-40 victory.
Heritage School jumped out to a 27-8 advantage starting with a 55-yard touchdown run by quarterback Payton Henson.
Spencer Perry added two scores for the Hawks, the first on a 37-yard swing pass and the other coming on an 88-yard punt return to push Heritage School's lead to 20-0 early in the second quarter.
Arlington got on the scoreboard on the ensuing kickoff, however, returned by Raheem Gilliam for the first of his five touchdowns for the Eagles' quarterback.
Heritage School got the score back on Matt Burns' score late in the first half.
Arlington countered on Tyler Howard's 30-yard touchdown and got the ball back just before halftime. But Heritage School's Cole Jones picked off a pass by Gilliam and returned it 60 yards to put the Hawks ahead 33-16 at the break.
Heritage School added two more scores in the second half, a second by Burns on a 70-yard run and another from 33 yards out by fullback A.J. Gainwell.
Chase Evans led the Hawks in tackles, and was followed by Anthony Kirby and Carlisle Taylor. Trey Wood also had a hit behind the line of scrimmage for Heritage.
Tyler Howard and Gilliam led Arlington in rushing yards.

VOLLEYBALL: HERITAGE MIDDLE REMAINS UNDEFEATED
The Heritage Middle School volleyball team improved its record to 9-0 last Thursday with a 25-23, 14-25, 25-10 victory over Griffin Christian in a match that went the distance.
Setter Hallie Hunt helped lead the way and added 24 service points. Maddie Duke and Catherine Heindel were strong on both ends of the floor.
The Hawks JV team improved its record to 4-4, bouncing back from a slow start to defeat Griffin Christian 9-25, 25-15, 25-20. Natalie Bunch led the effort, with Abbie Duke and Cara Stechman combining for 33 service points. Setter Lillie Smith lead the defensive effort.
