When it comes to The Heritage School's defending Class AA state cross country championship teams, keeping pace doesn't seem to be a problem, either on the course or when it comes to the program's continued success in 2011.

Both teams rolled to impressive results last weekend at the Mercer Run-Fit Invitational in Macon. Cool weather help the Lady Hawks to a division championship, while Heritage's boys took second.

"This (meet) is a great opportunity for us to see the college and GHSA teams run. It gives our runners a sense of where they stack up against GHSA runners since we can't compete head to head with them in meets," said longtime Heritage School head coach Frank Marchman. "It was a cool temperature day and most of our runners had career bests. That will hopefully give them confidence that they are training well and getting some solid results."

Senior Gabe Pulsipher turned in a personals-best time of 16:29 on the 5K course at the Macon Children's Home. Teammates John Dean Uglum and Tanner Brander weren't far behind, finishing seventh and eighth, respectively.

Senior Joel Prock was 11th and Daniel Martin crossed 13th, with Leland Warren capping off the scoring in 28th position. Only a strong Mount de Sales lineup, running not far from home, finished ahead of heritage.

Meanwhile, freshman Ruthie Powell also captured a personal-best mark of 19:35 to lead the Lady Hawks to a first place finish. Powell finished second overall, just five seconds behind Deerfield-Windsor runner Mackenzie Davis.

Senior Lauren Brandner placed a strong fifth overall, while Ellie Crosby and Mackenzie York paced each other, finishing 13th and 14th, respectively. Kathryn Martin was 17th and Clara Haugen rounded out the scoring in 24th position.

VOLLEYBALL

The Heritage School's JV and middle school volleyball teams swept Harvester Christian on Monday night.

The middle school team swept 25-14, 25-17, led by Hembree Monk's play both on serves and on the front line. Catherine Heindel and Zofia Powell also helped the Hawks improve to 10-0 heading into Tuesday's match at Oak Mountain.

The Hawks JV team held off Harvester in a 28-26, 27-25 victory led by the defense of Cara Stechmann and Isa Gutierrez. Nora Powell was a standout both in Heritage's service game and on defense. The team travels to Heirway on Thursday.
