Heritage School’s middle and lower school football teams each added victories last week.
The middle school Hawks shut out Griffin Christian 34-0, getting two quick scores off special teams en route to a blowout win.
Heritage School's A.J. Gainwell caused a fumble on the opening kickoff that was scooped up by teammate Payton Henson for an immediate 7-0 advantage. The Hawks added to their lead when Spencer Perry returned Griffin’s first punt 50 yards to make it 14-0.
Heritage School's sixth and seventh graders came on from there to finish the game, adding three more touchdowns.
Brothers Hays and McCullough Burns scored respective touchdowns on a 70-yard run and a 30yard touchdown reception from quarterback Kirby Arnall.
Hamp Smith added a score for the Hawks and Carlyle Taylor hit 4 of 5 point-after tries.
Arnall finished 3-for-3 passing with his touchdown, while also leading the Hawks in tackles.
Matt Henson and Hays Burns finished with interceptions and Chase Evans also had a strong night on defense.
The lower school team battled to defeat Faith Academy 28-22 in overtime, getting three touchdowns from Branch Burns, including the game-winning score off left end on fourth down in overtime.
Burns’ first touchdown tied the game at 6-6 before adding another as the first-half clock expired for a 14-14 tie after Gridley Pendergrast added the two-point conversion.
Jack Stanley’s bulldozing run put Heritage School ahead for the first time, but the Lions rallied to send the game into overtime. Stanley also caused two Faith Academy fumbles in the win, recovering both.
Sam Martin led Heritage School in tackles.
