Hawks, Lady Hawks take 2 from Calvary

By Stuart Crosby

The Newnan Times-Herald

The Heritage School Hawks had a close varsity doubleheader Monday night with the Calvary Knights in a GISA Region 4-AA matchup at the Hawks gym.

In the girls' game, the Lady Hawks got 10 points from Katie Kaufmann who also had several steals throughout the evening in a 41-38 win while the boys game won their first game of the season with a 50-48 decision that may have aged head coach Phillip Miles a few years.

"We are a young team and still learning how to win games," he said of his team." Our shot selection was a little off and we had trouble at the line, but I will take a win however we got it."

In the first period, the two teams were able to escape situations that came from the turnover bug, but a trio of three-point baskets by Seth Bonner gave the home crowd something to cheer about as the Hawks had a 13-10 going into the second period.

The Hawks struggled in the second period with turnovers and several players picking up their second or third fouls to go along with Evan Jones of the Knights who scored 10 of his club's 18 points in the stanza and the team from Columbus took a 28-21 lead to the locker room.

Jones led all scorers from both clubs with 18 points.

The Hawks managed to get their game together in the third period.

A three-pointer from Bonner and two-pointers from Garrett Okun and Cliff Cranford led to an 18-point stanza for Heritage School which took a 39-37 lead into the final eight minutes of the game.

Bonner led the Hawks in scoring with 17 points, Okun finished with 13 while Cranford, Irwin Dunn and Kyle Kimsey each scored six points.

In the fourth period, the Hawks held four to six point leads until the middle of the stanza when they became their own worst enemy with a number of turnovers that allowed the Knights to hang around as Jones scored eight points in the period but missed a jumper with 13.4 seconds left in regulation that would have tied the game.

In the girls' game the Lady Hawks scored a basket seconds after the opening tip as Kaufman put in a layup and after one period, Heritage School led 14-9 as Calvary was held scoreless in the final two minutes of the stanza.

That would be the largest margin either side would have the rest of the game as the Lady Hawks led 20-19 at intermission as both teams shooting went cold and 30-29 after three periods.

Following Kaufmann in scoring for the Lady Hawks were Maggie Ginn, Kendall Roy, Megan Gruber and Nicole Young with six each and Julie Thames with five.
