DAMASCUS – Heritage School quarterback Joe Bonner proved he could make big plays on both sides of the ball on Friday, scoring a go-ahead touchdown with 2:34 remaining and then coming up with an interception in the final 15 seconds to help the Hawks pull out a 30-28 victory here over Southwest Georgia.
Heritage School's seventh victory of the season sets a school record for wins and more importantly keeps the Hawks (7-1, 2-1) in the thick of the playoff hunt in GISA Region 2-AA.
Both Heritage School and Brookwood School (4-4, 2-1) are a victory behind Valwood (7-1, 2-1) in the region standings and will play next Friday for a share of first place.
Getting there wasn't easy on Friday.
Southwest Georgia came within a two-point conversion with 35 seconds left to sending the game to overtime. A tackle by Dalton Trammell shy of the goal line on a run off the left side seemed to save the day.
The Warriors, however, managed to recover an onside kick to keep possession, getting the ball just outside the Heritage School 20-yard line with 15 seconds left when Bonner picked off a five-yard pass attempt to seal the win.
Bonner, a third-year starter at quarterback, showed he could carry the Hawks on Friday in a game that featured three lead changes.
Heritage School used Ben Dudley's 24-yard field goal just before halftime to take a 16-14 lead into the break, before momentum swung like a pendulum for the final two quarters.
The Warriors took their final lead with 5:29 left in the third quarter after Candler Rich's run off a fake punt was ruled inches short near midfield.
Converting to take a 22-16 lead, play continued into the final period with Bonner able to extend a Heritage School drive with a fourth-down run to the nine yard line. Three plays later, Rich ran over one of the pylons off an end run to put the Hawks ahead 23-22 with 9:34 remaining.
Bonner's 1-yard sneak on fourth-and-goal turned out to be a crucial play, giving the Hawks the eventual winning score and a 30-22 lead with 2:34 remaining.
Bonner added a 9-yard touchdown pass to Ryan Lynch in the first half, while Rich finished with two scores.
