The Heritage School track teams head into the second week of the 2011 season following what first-year head coach JP Weaver called both a "very energetic and enthusiastic" start," following its opening meet on Wednesday at Mount de Sales in Macon.
"I watched a young team grow up (Wednesday)," Weaver said after the meet. "Our student athletes worked hard, performed well, gave great effort, and began the season on a very positive note. I am excited about what's in store for the remainder of the season and looking forward in seeing our team improve on a weekly basis as we work hard in reaching our goals."
The meet featured individual victories by Hawks senior John Veal and Lady Hawks sophomore Chase Parker.
Parker, who won a state championship in the 300-meter hurdles last year, turned in a pair of victories with the Heritage School sophomore factoring into both efforts. While she didn't compete in the 300 hurdles, Parker finished first in the 200 meters individually, and also took third in the 100 hurdles.
Parker also joined Julie Thames, Mollie Carter and senior Aleisha Khan for a Lady Hawks victory in the 1,600-meter relay. The same foursome also finished third in the 400 relay.
Individually, Khan added a second-place effort in the 800. Sophomore Makenzie York equally added two top-five efforts, placing fourth in the 100 hurdles and fifth in the 400 run.
On the boys side, Veal had a pair of finishes in the top five. In addition to a victory in the 110 high hurdles, Veal took fifth in the 400 and was equally solid in the discus.
Fellow senior Stuart Bready was also strong in the field, finishing third in the shot and fourth in the discus. Younger brother David, a freshman, scored points for the Hawks in the 200, taking fourth, and the long jump, where he placed fifth.
Freshmen Kyle Shuman and John Uglum also provided depth for Heritage's boys. Shuman took sixth in the 400. Junior Joel Prock and Uglum finished fourth and fifth, respectively, in the 800.
The Hawks' 1,600 relay team of Veal, Prock, Shuman and Will Duke capped off the meet with a third-place finish.
"I've been very impressed with the commitment and dedication," Weaver said. " In addition, our parents, coaching staff, and faculty and staff at Heritage have been nothing but supportive in the positive direction our program is heading"
