Coweta Sports Digest: Grumbling sets record to win National Marine Corps rifle title

By Chris Goltermann

The Newnan Times-Herald

The giant vacancy left by a pair of All-State shooters in East Coweta's program may now measure as small as the tiny hole left during a perfect shot by a precision air rifle.

That's because Adam Grumbling has been a near-miss in both instances this year for ECHS.

Grumbling, who has been stellar in Georgia High School Association matches this season for East Coweta after taking on a new role as co-captain, set a national record while winning the National Marine Corps JROTC Rifle Championships last weekend at Camp Perry in Ohio.

Shooting against more than 50 of the top Marine Corps shooters from high schools throughout the country, Grumbling won the two-day championship by posting a score of 592 out of a possible 600 to hold a slim one-point lead during the final day of competition.

"It was truly amazing," said East Coweta coach Master Sgt. John Skinner.

Grumbling, who was joined by sophomore Kelsey Moral among East Coweta's pair of qualifiers for the event, hit 52 bullseyes out of a possible 60 shots during his record-setting performance. He opened the tournament by shooting a 588 on the first day of the event, before firing a season-high 592 in the 3-by-20 shot (prone, standing, kneeling) format.

He now moves on to represent East Coweta at the Service Nationals later this month in Anniston, Ala.

It will remain a busy week for both Grumbling and Moral, who finished 32nd overall in her first national tournament. East Coweta's shooters, which also include co-captain Tyler Dayton, freshman Zachary Moye and sophomore Kevin Murray, will be competing Thursday in the GHSA Area 5 tournament, with hopes of returning to this year's state championships.

East Coweta finished fifth overall last season led by seniors Courtney Duncan and April Dunn, who are now in their freshman season with Columbus State's inaugural shooting program.

LACROSSE

LADY COUGARS WIN TOURNAMENT TITLE : When Newnan's lacrosse teams return to action Friday at home against Harrison, they hope to continue an early season surge that saw both of its lineups perform well at last week's Inside Perimeter Tournament -- including a tournament victory by the Lady Cougars.

The Lady Cougars built a commanding 13-3 lead while also getting four goals from junior Elizabeth Finger, three from sophomore McKynsey Douglas and a pair from senior Jordan Nixon.

Senior Rachel Skinner also scored for Newnan and Abby Eisenmann added an assist. Goalie Chandler Brandenburg had eight saves in the win as was named to the all tournament team along with both Cessily and Rachel Skinner. The Lady Cougars (3-1) also defeated Holy Innocents 8-3 in tournament play.

Newnan's boys (1-1) are coming off an 11-3 win over Northgate in non-area play.
