Former major leaguer Colton now helps re-create MAGIC

By TOMMY CAMP tommy@newnan.com Chris Colton, former Newnan High School star who played in the Seattle Mariners organization, has been named head coach of one the two Under-14 teams of the MAGIC (Making Athletic Girls Into Champions), a Coweta County fast-pitch softball organization. After graduating from Newnan High School Colton was drafted in the 15th round of the amateur draft by the Mariners, but opted to attend Middle Georgia College in Cochran.
He was named MVP his freshman season for the team that captured the state junior college championship. He signed with the Mariners after that one season at Middle Georgia and spent eight seasons playing in the Northwest League, the Midwest League, the California League, the Frontier League and the American Association. He enjoyed his best season in 2005, hitting .335 for the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers in Appleton in the Midwest League. For the past two years he has been working with the Lee Middle School (metro area) fast pitch team with coach Bush Denney and will head up the program at Arnall this year. MAGIC was started in 2004 by Larry Shelnutt and currently boasts seven teams - one U10, one U12, two U14, two U16 and one U18. During that short period of time MAGIC teams have won a number of championships and the organization has been instrumental in helping 85 girls win college scholarships. Prior to originating MAGIC Shelnutt was associated with the Sharpsburg Recreation League. He has also coached at Franklin County (Tenn.), East Coweta and Heard County High Schools.
