Football playoffs feature QBs with solid athletic lineages

Sports Column by STUART CROSBY

While the state of Georgia is down to the final four in each of the five classifications of the high school playoffs, a number of other states are also holding their own semifinal rounds or they are looking to crown their own champions in football this weekend.

Among the states that will crown a state champion is Mississippi where St. Stanislaus Prep of Bay St. Louis will face Lafayette County this Saturday afternoon at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Jackson.

Unless you hail from the Gulf Coast, you may not recognize the name of the community of Bay St. Louis or the name of the two schools, but you might recognize the last name of a player who is a member of the St. Stanislaus club.

The player is the starting quarterback for the Rockachaws and has broken a number of state and school records with his golden arm which has led to comparisons with a famous relative.

The young man in question is Dylan Favre who is the nephew of a guy in the NFL named Brett who has made a name for himself with the Packers, Jets and now the Minnesota Vikings.

Monday night the younger Favre (who wears number 6 at St. Stanislaus) was honored by the Jackson Touchdown Club as their player-of-the-year after a season in which he was able to set a single game record for passing yards at 562 and add to career numbers in total offense (13, 755 yards), passing (12, 140) and touchdowns with 141.

While he acknowledges receiving an individual award, Favre told the Biloxi Sun-Herald recently he didn't earn it without some help.

"It does feel nice to be recognized, in somebody's opinion, that you are the best player in the state," he said. "I am not much into honors because I can't throw a touchdown without the line blocking or the receivers running routes, Also, we don't get the ball on offense if the defense does not stop opponents."

Having eye-popping statistics, playing for a successful team and having the same last name is where the similarities end for the Favres as Brett is listed at 6-foot-4 while Dylan is listed by Scout.com as 5-foot-10.

The younger Favre is considering a number of schools such as Alabama, Florida International, Memphis and Southern Mississippi which is his uncle's alma mater.

Another state holding playoffs is California where the Oaks Christian Lions and the Cathedral Phantoms will meet in a semifinal game for one of the classifications this weekend.

Again, you won't recognize the name of the schools involved, but the last name of the Oaks Christian quarterback is one that was well known in the 1980s.

Nick Montana is the youngest son of Joe and Jennifer Montana and his team is one step closer to a championship provided they defeat the Phantoms this weekend.

His passing numbers are very solid for the unbeaten Lions as has completed 134-of-224 passes for 2274 yards and 29 touchdowns while throwing only seven interceptions.

The younger Montana made news earlier in the year in this state when the University of Georgia was among the list of schools that he was considering, but he eventually decided on being a Husky as opposed to a Bulldog when he committed to the University of Washington.

Should the 6-foot-3 Montana either become injured or ineffective, the Lions have a backup with an athletic background named Trevor Gretzky.

The young Gretzky is the oldest son of Wayne and Janet Jones Gretzky so I guess the Lions' den of quarterbacks is athletic.

Gretzky's passing numbers were few as he was 23-of-41 for 288 yards and four touchdowns, but he will probably get his opportunity next season when he will become the starter.

Also, he does not wear number 99 after his father, but a quarterback-like number 2 while Nick Montana wears number 5.
