Fresh from their championship in last weekend's Up the Creek Tournament, the East Coweta Lady Indians took advantage of mistakes by the Newnan Lady Cougars and added some timely hitting in a 7-1 victory on Tuesday at Newnan.
The non-region win at the Lady Cougars field improved the Lady Indians overall record 7-0, while the Lady Cougars fell to 3-4.
"We are playing pretty good right now, but I know there is better ball in us," said East Coweta head coach Franklin Deloach. "The girls played well. Alison Owen pitched well and had a couple of hits and some girls came out of slumps they had during the tournament."\
Both teams will have non-region games this afternoon as the Lady Indians travel to Peachtree City to face the McIntosh Lady Chiefs while the Lady Cougars will travel to Carrollton to face the Lady Trojans.
The Lady Indians took control with a 2-0 lead after their first at bat. Haley Parkerson led off the game with a bunt single and stole second before scoring on a two-out single by Nikki Rainey.
With Owen at the plate, Rainey stole second before giving East Coweta a two-run lead after the Lady Indian pitcher reached on an infield error.
Owen was equally solid on the mound, retiring her first 11 batters, including four on strikeouts, while helping instigate a four-run rally in the fourth It included her double to right-field that almost cleared the fence.
Brittany Satterfield ran for Owen and came home on an error in the outfield that also allowed Malori Maddox to reach second.
Advancing to third on a passed ball, Maddox scored two batters later on an RBI single to center by Shirley Daniels to give ECHS a 4-0 lead.
Parkerson was awarded first after being hit by a pitch before Christina Ezell closed the rally with a two-run double to left-center field.
Newnan cut the lead to 6-1 in the bottom of the fourth on consecutive hits. Katie Stewart's RBI double scored Molly Garmany, who reached on an infield single.
Then in the fifth, the Lady Cougars got help defensively on a pair of plays. Maddox was tagged out by Garmany at the plate while trying to score on a single by Jenna Ward. The Newnan catcher added a strike to shortstop Tanesha McDowell to gun down Satterfield on an attempted steal.
But Owen proved too tough, retiring the next 10 batters to seal the victory for the Lady Indians. East Coweta added another run in the top of the seventh inning when Ezell reached on her second double of the game. Haleigh Darnell ran for Ezell and moved to third on a groundout before coming home on a single by Rainey.
