East Coweta, Newnan, Heritage set for round 2

East Coweta and Newnan swing into playoff action again on Wednesday in the second round of the State Class AAAAA tournament.

East Coweta hosts Coffee while Newnan plays at Warner Robins.

Heritage plays its second round GISA series beginning Friday at home against Gatewood.

All three series are best two out of three.

East Coweta swept M.L. King in first round action last Friday, 3-2 and 14-3, while Newnan took two of three from Redan, capping the series with a dramatic come from behind 10-8 rubber-game win on Saturday.

Newnan was the only fourth seeded team in Five-A to advance out of the first round.

Heritage took two straight from Southwest Georgia in its opening series at home last weekend.

Warner Robins, the number two team from Region 1-AAAAA with a 19-8 overall record, eliminated Groves on Friday at home with 6-0 and 13-0 shutouts to advance to face Newnan.

The wins were the third and fourth in a row for Warner Robins which heads into the Newnan series having won seven of its last eight and 11 of its last 13.

Coffee, the number three team from 1-AAAAA, beat Jenkins on the road in three games, winning Saturday’s deciding contest, 7-4.

The Trojans, which won back-to-back state championships in 1982-83, are 19-9 coming into the EC series.

Coffee reached the second round last year where it was eliminated by Camden County in three games.

Heritage’s wins over Southwest Georgia were the Hawks’ 14th and 15th straight victories.

Gatewood beat Frederica in the first round to advance to meet the Hawks.

The winner of the Heritage-Gatewood series faces the Brookwood-Windsor winner in next week’s state semifinals.

EC, Newnan and Mundy’s Mill remain alive in the playoffs out of Region 4-AAAAA.

Mundy’s Mill, 4-5A’s No. 2 team, beat Union Grove in the first round in three games.

Miguel Starks pitched the 4-2 win in game three, allowing just four hits while striking out 10.

The Tigers play at Camden County on Wednesday. Camden is the No. 1 team out of 3-AAAAA.

Hiram, the No. 3 team from 4-AAAAA, was eliminated in the opening round last Friday by Luella in two games.

Starr’s Mill and Woodward Academy advanced out of the first round from Region 2-AAAA.

Northgate lost its opening series to Griffin in two straight games while McIntosh was eliminated by Jones County, also in two games.

Starr’s Mill, which beat Northside-Warner Robins in the first round in three games, plays at Lee County on Wednesday while Woodward Academy, which topped Dutchtown in the opening round in three games, hosts Thomas County Central.

Region 4-AAAAA is one of four regions in state Five-A play with three teams still alive.

Valdosta, Warner Robins and Coffee have advanced out of 1-AAAAA, South Forsyth, Mill Creek and Norcross out of Region 7 and Kell, Walton (last year’s state champions) and Lassiter out of Region 6.

Two No. 1 seeded teams were beaten in the first round in Five-A, Redan and Harrison.
