Cougars solid in wrestling debut

Newnan opened its 2009-10 wrestling season on Saturday with a pair of wins over Area 4-AAAAA opponents at the Comet Duals at South Gwinnett High School in Snellville.

Returning Cougar starters and junior co-captains, Brian Shea and Lucas Malcolm were among those who helped the program get off to a solid start.

Newnan defeated Mundy's Mill 42-41 and Westlake 48-36 among competition that also included Dacula, Harrison, host South Gwinnett, Dutchtown and Wesleyan.

At 125 pounds, Shea won four matches, three of which ended with pins, while also pulling off a 5-3 decision against Dacula. Malcolm, who reached the Class AAAAA state sectionals last season, pulled off pins against both Area 4-AAAAA opponents at 140-pounds. Returner Anthony Musac also had a pin at the 140 class.

David Finlay and Caleb Spinks, both big contributors as freshmen last year, put together impressive sophomore debuts. Finlay finished with four pins at 152 pounds, beating opponents from South Gwinnett Dutchtown and Wesleyan . At 145, Spinks added three pins in matches against Dacula, Mundy's Mill and South Gwinnett.

Newcomer Andrew Sowerbrower, a freshman lightweight, picked up his first varsity wins at 103 pounds, picking up a pin against Westlake and decisions against Mundy's Mill and Dutchtown.

Also scoring points for Newnan on Saturday included Jacob Jennings with a decision at 119, Joseph Tallman with a pin at 130, Eric Shea with a decision at 135, Alec Nauris with a pin at 171 and John McBrier with a pin at 189.

Returner Jacob Owens also suffered a dislocated shoulder but should be able to return to the mat next month sometime following the Thanksgiving break. The Cougars will next wrestle at the LaGrange Granger Duals on Dec. 5.
