WG Bass Club to help tornado victims

The University of West Georgia Bass Club has only been around for a couple of years, but the group of anglers has already made a big splash on the college circuit.

Founded by Newnan High School graduate Kenny Johnson, the West Georgia squad made a made a name for itself with a 10-place finish at the Carhartt College Series Southern Regionals.

Some big things are happening,” Johnsons said earlier this year.

They added to that success with a 20th-place showing at the Georgia State Championships.

Now, Johnson and club co-founder Brandon Larry want to give back.

The fishing duo was deeply effected by the tornados that hit the Moore and El Reno, Okla regions in May, and the two want to do their part to help the victims.

Johnson has organized a benefit fishing tournament at West Point Lake on July 13.

The even will be sponsored by Highland Marina Resort free of charge.

“We wanted to help the victims after we saw how bad it was. We also wanted to show that we are more than just a fishing club,” Johnson told Bassmaster Magazine.

Johnson also has several contacts in the fishing industry including Yamaha, who will offer several products to be raffled.

There will be a $100 entry fee. Based on a field of 100 boats, with  a $2,000 grand prize with other payouts to the top 14 finishers. 

The tournament will also conduct a optional big-fish fee of $10.

The rest of the money raised through both the entry fees and the raffle will go to the tornado victims.

“This is  great cause and we hope everybody comes out to support it,” Johnson said.

The tournament is set to begin at daylight and will be divided into two flights.

Weigh-in for the first flight is set for 3 p.m. The weigh-in for the second flight is at 3:30.
