Vaughn to play in Junior Amateur qualifier
Newnan High golfer Carson Vaughn hopes to follow in former Cougar Trevor Smith’s footsteps during Monday’s U.S. Junior Amateur qualifier at the University of Georgia course.
Vaughn is expected to be among 90 players competing over36 holes for four spots and two alternate positions in the 66th annual Junior Amateur, set for July 22-27 at Martis Camp Club in Truckee, Calif.
Two summers ago, Smith qualified for the 64th U.S. Amateur, before eventually earning a scholarship to Coastal Georgia. In his freshman year, Smith played in four events and finished with a 75.78 scoring average. He recently qualified for the upcoming Georgia State Golf Association Amateur to be held July 11-14 at Pinetree Country Club in Kennesaw.
Vaughn could continue a trend of local boys and girls players to have qualified for the prestigious junior event. They include Annie Swords and recent East Coweta graduate Ji Eun Baik, who will be attending Mississippi State on a golf scholarship. Baik qualified for last year’s Junior Amateur and Swords made the tournament in 2011.
Baik will compete in this week’s GSGA Top 60 Women’s Classic at Green Island Country Club in Columbus. The 36-hole tournament begins Wednesday and also includes Jodie Shepard of Newnan Country Club.
Swords, meanwhile, continues a busy summer while looking to return to the U.S. Girls Junior Amateur in a July 1 qualifier at Cartersville Country Club. The Heritage School standout will be joined by sisters Jordan and Cameron Daniel — both of Landmark Christian — among local players in the event.
