County's GHSA schools score well in Director's Cup

East Coweta, Newnan and Northgate were well represented in the Georgia High School Association Directors Cup standings for the 2012-13 school year.

The Director’s Cup competition has been held every year since 1999-2000 and awards points to each school based on its performances in the playoffs and state meets for the 24 sports sanctioned by the GHSA during the past school year.

Points are accumulated based on each of the school’s eight most successful sports teams for each gender.

Paced by its state title in girls soccer, Northgate finished seventh overall in the in the Class AAAAA standings with 749 points. 

Four of the top seven teams in the Class AAAAA Director’s Cup standings came from Region 4-AAAAA.

McIntosh won the Class  AAAAA cup with 1,175 points followed by region rival Starr’s Mill with 1,136. Whitewater, which lost to Northgate at the girls state meet finished one spot ahead of the Vikings in sixth place with 869.

In Class AAAAAA, East Coweta High School finished 15th overall with 789 points.

On the football field, East Coweta advanced to the second round of the state playoffs by beating Newton. Their season ended with a loss to Camden County.

The boys soccer team also made it to the Final Four before losing to eventual state champion Berkmar in a game decided on the final penalty kick.

Both the softball and baseball teams made it to the Elite 8, while the football and girls basketball team made it to the state tournament.

East Coweta also garnered Director’s Cup points by making it to the state tournament in boys lacrosse and the girls soccer team.

The school also advanced to the second round of the state tournament in boys and girls tennis teams.

East Coweta’s wrestling team also made it to the state duals.

The Indians turned in the highest score among Region 6-AAAAAA teams, scoring 457 points among boys sports and 366 in girls sports. East Coweta also advanced to the GHSA Finals in riflery.

Newnan scored 707 points overall, including 331 points in boys sports and 341 in girls sports.

It was the second highest point total in Region 3-AAAAAA behind East Coweta.

The Cougars points came from advancing to second-round of the state baseball tournament, the first round of the boys basketball tournament and making a trip to the second round of the Class AAAAAA football tournament losing to Colquitt County 26-23.

Newnan also advanced to the Elite 8 in boys soccer and to the second round in girls soccer.

The Lady Cougars also earned a spot in the state tournament in girls lacrosse and made the GHSA State Gymnastics Meet for the second straight year.

Newnan’s softball team made it to the second-round of the state tournament.

On the tennis court, Newnan’s boys and girls made it to the Sweet 16.

The volleyball team made it to the Sweet 16 of the Class AAAAAA tournament.
