Timeline: A Look Back


 The 2012-13 school year brought the retirement of several longtime coaches including, clockwise from top left, Northgate wrestling Adrian Anderson, E ast C oweta girls basketball c oach Paula Jones, Northgate boys basketball coach Mack Cain and Newnan baseball coach Kenny Morris.

Here is a look back at some of the sports highlights that happened during the 2012-13 school year:


Aug. 15: East Coweta opens the 2012 softball season with a 4-1 victory over Northgate in the Georgia Dugout Club Tournament. The Lady Vikings come into the season fresh off a Class AAAA state title in 2011.

Aug. 24: The Newnan Cougars get a jump on the season, kicking off the 2012 campaign a week early than most schools with a 38-29 come-from-behind victory against Marietta. East Coweta and Northgate will play their openers a week later. All three teams featured first-year starting quarterbacks as sophomore Bailey Bryant started for Newnan, junior Bryce Gemmel for East Coweta and senior Josh Harrison for the Vikings.


Sept. 6: The East Coweta Lady Indians volleyball team end Northgate’s seven-year run as Coweta County champs, winning the title with victories over both the Lady Vikings and the Newnan Lady Cougars.

Sept. 6: In the first of three meetings between softball rivals, East Coweta pitcher Megan Chocallo lifts the Lady Indians to a 2-0 victory over Newnan.

Sept: 12: The East Coweta Indians became the second-straight victim from Coweta County to lose to Sandy Creek on the football field, falling to the Patriots 31-7. A week earlier, Newnan lost to the Patriots 38-7.

Sept. 14: Newnan Cougars put together a fourth-quarter comeback against Troup County to win 21-14 to move their record to 3-1. The Cougars had to rally for all thee wins in during the first month of the season.


Oct. 5: East Coweta knocks off Newnan 5-4 on the softball diamond to capture the Region 3-AAAAAA title.

Oct. 19: Newnan’s volleyball team advanced to the second-round of the Class AAAAAA Tournament with a 3-0 win over McEachern. Northgate also gets a 3-0 win over Glynn Academy on the road in Brunswick.

Oct. 18: East Coweta sweeps Colquitt County to advance to the Elite 8 softball tournament in Columbus.

Oct. 19: The East Coweta Lady Indians volleyball team was knocked out of the first round of the Class AAAAAA tournament by Roswell, getting swept in three games.

Oct. 28: The Northgate Lady Vikings volley team fell to Starr’s Mill 3-1 (23-25, 25-13, 25-20 and 25-21) at the Class AAAA Elite 8.

Oct. 31: Madras defeats Smokey Road 12-8 to win the CCMSAL football title.


Nov. 9: The Newnan Cougars football team defeat East Coweta 21-7 in the final regular-season game for both teams. The playoffs open the following week.

Nov. 16: The Georgia High School Association playoffs start with Newnan beating Alcovy 38-0 and East Coweta beating Newton County 25-20. Northgate took an early exit from the first round of the Class AAAAA playoffs, falling to Harris County 31-14.

Nov. 17: Heritage Christian’s football team reaches its first 8-man ICSGA football championship game, playing Ballard (Ala.) Christian at Young Americans in Conyers. Ballard holds off Heritage 39-28. 

Nov. 23: Both the East Coweta and Newnan football teams ended their seasons with second-round losses in the playoffs. Newnan fell 26-23 to Colquitt County, while East Coweta dropped a 34-14 decision to Camden County.

Nov. 30: The Heritage School’s most successful football season in school history ends in the GISA Class AAA championship game against Deerfield Windsor in Albany. The Hawks came up short in a 27-19 loss. 


Dec. 5: Northgate’s swim team captures a team title at the annual Coweta County Championship meet at the Summit YMCA Peniston-Powell Aquatic Center.

Dec. 12: East Coweta wrestling team recaptures the “ugly rug” by winning a title at the annual Coweta County Championships.

Dec. 13: Madras Middle’s boys and Lee’s girls capture Coweta County Middle School Athletic League soccer championships.

Dec. 22: Coweta County was well represented at the first Coalition Bowl high school all-star game played at the Georgia Dome. Newnan cornerback Rodney Tennie and East Coweta kicker/punter Spencer Smith each took home team and MVP honors as their Central All-Star team won 10-0.


Jan. 6: Newnan defensive back Tray Matthews, who signed to play at the University of Georgia, capped his high school career with an appearance in the U.S. Army All-American game in San Antonio. Matthews enrolled at Georgia in January and went through spring practice with the Bulldogs.

Jan. 11: East Coweta and Newnan basketball teams split their rivalry with the Cougars winning the boys game 67-58, while the Lady Indians won 50-40.

Jan.18: Heritage provides a sneak preview of its new basketball facility with a sweep over rival Trinity Christian School.The new facility will officially open for the 2013-14 season.


Feb. 1: Coaching her final season at East Coweta, longtime Lady Indians head girls basketball coach Paula Jones wins her 516th game with a 60-48 victory over Tri-Cities. 

Feb. 6: National Signing Day sees athletes sign Division I football scholarships at Northgate, Newnan East Coweta, The Heritage School and Trinity Christian on a landmark day for football signings.

Feb. 13: The Northgate Vikings make some basketball history with a 40-33 win over McIntosh in the Region 4-AAAAAA tournament. The win over the Chiefs clinched the program’s first trip to the state tournament and prolonged the retirement of longtime boys coach Mack Cain.

Feb. 16: Northgate wrestler Tyler Askey finished his remarkable career with his fourth state title. Askey never lost a high school match, finiwshing with a 194-0 record. The University of Virginia-bound wrestler capped his career with a 16-6 record victory over David Shavers in the finals at the Macon Colliseum.

Feb. 21: The Morrow boys defeat Newnan 63-54 in first-round of the Class AAAAA basketball tournament, while Northside-Columbus beat Northgate 64-46.


March 1: The East Coweta Indians baseball team begins the month of March with a 10-0 mercy-rule victory over South Forsyth. It was the third win of the year for East Coweta, which won 16 in a row to start the season and eventually earned a No. 1-ranking from the Georgia Dugout Club in Class AAAAAA.

March 15: The East Coweta boys  defeated Tucker 2-0 in a non-region soccer game to start a streak of six straight shutouts.

March 16: The Heritage School and Trinity Christian split region soccer games with the Lions and Lady Hawks earning victories.

March 16: Whitewater’s girls soccer team holds off Northgate 1-0 in Area 4-AAAAA play. Things will be a whole lot different nearly two months later when the teams meet again in the Class AAAAA state title game at the University of West Georgia.

March 25: The Newnan girls soccer team beat rival East Coweta 1-0 in the Coweta Cup. Although they lost to Northgate two days later, a tie breaking system gave the county trophy to Newnan.


April 13: Northgate senior Jonathan Fleckenstein leads the Vikings’ baseball team to a 13-4 win on the road at Ola to keep the Vikings’ playoffs alive.

April 16: In the opener of the three-game baseball series, East Coweta rolls past Newnan 12-1 with both teams battling for the Region 3-AAAAAA crown.

April 18: Newnan beats East Coweta 6-2 to even a best-of-three baseball series with a region title on the line.

April 20: After waiting an extra day due to rain, East Coweta wins the rubber match off its series with Newnan following a 12-5 win, eventually earning the region title by a single game in the standings. 

April 24: The Heritage School girls soccer team blanks Calvary Christian 8-0 to reach the GISA Class AAA Elite 8 with a lineup that includes just two seniors and a junior.

April 27: Westminster School of Augusta ends the Heritage School girls soccer season with a 1-0 victory in the second round of the playoffs.

April 30: All three local girls teams begin the GHSA soccer playoffs with victories as Northgate beats Lee County 5-2, Newnan beats Lovejoy 10-0, and East Coweta beat Luella 5-0.


May 1: The East Coweta Indians soccer team starts its playoff run with an 8-0 win over Alcovy. Newnan beat Luella 3-2 and Northgate beat Hardaway 3-2.

May 2: Northgate’s Conner Bergh and Alex Anderson scored points of the Vikings at the Class AAAAA state track and field meet. Bergh finished third in the pole vault  with a 13 feet, 6 inches mark. Anderson tied for fourth with a 12-6 finish.

May 3: East Coweta beats Rockdale and Newnan knocks off Newton, both in sweeps to open the Class AAAAAA baseball tournament. Northgate splits with Hardaway to force a third game in AAAAA.

May 4: The Vikings season comes to an end with a 6-0 loss to Hardaway in Columbus.

May 7: Northgate continues its run in the playoffs with a 3-2 second-round win over Lakesidee-Evans at the girls tournament. East Coweta falls to No. 1-ranked Harrison 5-1, while Hillgrove beats Newnan 1-0.

May 8: The Indians roll past Campbell 4-2 in the second round of the Class AAAAAA soccer playoffs. Newnan also gets a second round victory over Lowndes, winning the game 3-2. Northgate’s season ends with a 2-0 loss to Houston County.

May 8: East Coweta splits with Marietta, and Newnan splits with Tift County to force a third and deciding game in the second-round of the Class AAAAAA baseball tournament.

May 9: East Coweta extends its baseball season with a 3-2 win over Marietta. Longtime Newnan coach Kenny Morris ends his baseball coaching career with son Drew by his side in uniform as Tift County beats Newnan 5-2 in Game 3 of its second round Class AAAAAA series. Three playoff wins give Morris 469 for his career in the dugout. 

May 10: The Northgate Lady Vikings get a 1-0 victory on the road against Pope to advance to the Class AAAAA final four.

May 10: East Coweta freshman Aliah Whisby finishes second in the Class AAAAAA state high jump in Albany with a distance of 5 feet, 4 inches. 

May 11: After reaching the second round of the Class AAAAAA boys soccer playoffs, No. 2-ranked East Coweta knocks off defending state champion Lambert 3-2.

May 14: Northgate’s girls soccer team continues a string of road playoff victories with its most impressive yet. Taking on area nemesis McIntosh, the Lady Vikings rally for two goals late for a  2-1 overtime win over the two-time state champion Lady Chiefs in the state semifinals, advancing to the first soccer title in Northgate’s history.

May 14: Milton puts an end to East Coweta’s baseball season with 7-4 and 11-1 victories to sweep the Indians in the Class AAAAAA state quarterfinals. 

May 15: East Coweta’s boys soccer season comes to an end with a 3-2 loss at Berkmar in a game decided by penalty kicks. Both teams make their first six shots before Berkmar comes away with a 7-6 decision.

May 18: The Northgate Lady Vikings stun Whitewater’s top-ranked soccer team 4-1 for the Class AAAAA state championship. The team never trailed before breaking a 1-1 tie with three unanswered goals in the second half amidst a drizzling rain at the University of West Georgia. 

May 20: Heritage School golfer Annie Swords fires a 77 to win GISA Class AAA low medalist honors at the state tournament.
