Vikings qualify for state tournament

Northgate’s boys joined golfers from East Coweta and Newnan among qualifiers for Monday’s GHSA State Championships following efforts in sectional play.

Vikings Maddux Lytle, Nathan Garner, Daniel Salvatore and T.J. Womack each qualified individually for the Class AAAAA Boys Tournament at Pine Lakes Golf Course on Jekyll Island. 

Lytle and Garner, both juniors, fired respective rounds of 82 and 83. Salvatore added an 84 while Womack shot a 94. 

Newnan’s boys, East Coweta’s girls and Northgate’s girls all advanced to respective state tournaments at region events.

The Lady Vikings’ lineup, made up of juniors Haley Grant and Ashton Compton, sophomore Kelly Henderson and freshman Jessica Hock, will also play in Jekyll Island on Monday at Indian Mounds Golf Course. 

Lady Indians senior Ji Eun Baik leads East Coweta’s girls into the Class AAAAAA tournament at Sunset Country Club in Moultrie. Baik, who is headed to Mississippi State, is coming off two consecutive top-five finishes individually. 

She finished in a four-way tie for third place at the 2012 Class AAAAA tournament. 

This spring, Baik earned low-medalist honors in Region 3-AAAAAA with a 70 to lead the champion Lady Indians. Also qualifying individually was Newnan’s Kristyna Jirikova. 

Newnan’s boys advanced to the Class AAAAAA state tournament at Spring Hill Country Club in Tifton after also winning a 3-AAAAAA championship. The Cougars were led by low medalist Jordan Henry.

East Coweta senior Ryan Tobin also qualified individually for the state tournament with a 77 at the region event.
