by Staff Reports

The Newnan Lady Cougars lacrosse team closed out its regular season with a 17-8 loss to Holy Innocents.

Despite ending the season on a losing note, Newnan is headed to the state playoffs as the No. 4 seed and will meet Centennial in the first round.

Newnan fell behind 10-3 after the first half. Sydney Garmany’s goal at the 18:10 mark of the first half tied the contest at 1-1, but Holy Innocents took the lead on back-to-back goals in the first half to pull away from the Lady Cougars.

Newnan also got first-half scores from Sable Hawkins on an assist from Savannah Ohliger. Ohliger then added the Lady Cougars’ final goal of the first half.

Garmany, Ohliger and Sable Hawkins each finished with two goals.

Holy Innocents closed out the first half with six unanswered scores in a span of about eight minutes.

Newnan  opened the second half with goals by Anna Jarrett and Hawkins to trim the gap to 10-5, but that was as close as they could get.

Garmany, Hawkins and Ohlinger scored the final goals of the game for the Lady Cougars.

The Lady Cougars were led in ground balls by Hawkins with 4.

Lindsay Stewart split time with Hope Overton as goalie for Newnan with each recording six saves.
