Amtmann pitches Indians past Westlake

Just 48 hours after securing a victory over rival Newnan, the East Coweta Indians returned to the baseball diamond and picked up right where they left off Monday, knocking off Westlake 7-4 in a Region 3-AAAAAA contest.

The Indians rode the arm of starting pitcher Cole Amtmann, who went the distance against the Lions to secure the victory.

Amtmann held Westlake to just three hits, while striking out 9 and walking four.

Leading 7-1 heading into the seventh, the Indians secure the victory by shutting down a Westlake rally attempt.

The Lions scored three times in the seventh, but the game ended when Amtmann added his ninth strikeout.

East Coweta, which won two out of three against Newnan in last week’s region series, improved its region record to 12-1. The Indians still hold a one game lead over the Cougars in the league standings.

The Cougars tried to keep place with East Coweta with a 12-1 win over Langston Hughes and are 11-2 in league play.

East Coweta broke the game open against Westlake in the second inning by scoring four runs. 

Both teams played shutout baseball until the sixth when East Coweta added three runs.

Offensively, Amtmann helped his own cause with a 2-for-3 performance, including two runs.

Jon Banks, who hit a grand slam in the second game against Newnan last week, continued his offensive outburst with a hit and two RBIs. 

Stephen Cruver, who has come off the bench several times this year, was inserted into the lineup as the designated hitter, and he made the most of his time, going 1-for-3 with an RBI.

East Coweta and Westlake play each other again Wednesday with the Lions hosting the game at 5:30. The series returns to East Coweta Thursday for a 5:45 contest.
