Local athletes earn college honors

Nicholls (La.) State freshman Haley Parkerson is off to a fast start in her college softball career.

The former East Coweta outfielder hit .524 in five games last week to earn Southland Conference Hitter of the Week honors.

Parkerson, who is a starting outfielder, hit safely in all five of her games which included a pair of three-hit performances. She has reached safely in 17 straight games.

In a recent conference series against Southeastern Louisiana, she went 7 of 12 and scored three times.

• BASEBALL – LaGrange College’s Shiver honored

Former East Coweta and current LaGrange College third baseman Josh Shiver has been selected USA South Player of the Week.

Shiver, who is a senior at LaGrange, batted .600 (9 of 15) to help the Panthers win twice against conference-foe Maryville.

Shiver scored four runs and drove in four runs during the three-game series against Maryville. He also had a double and stole his team-leading 17th base.

In the last 11 games, Shiver is batting .383 with eight RBIs. He has raised his season batting average from .260 to a team-leading .310.

• WOMEN’S LACROSSE – Dillard earns all-conference honors

Northgate graduate Tiffany Dillard ended her LaGrange College lacrosse career on a high note after receiving USA All-South honors. Dillard scored 12 goals and tied for second with 42 ground balls. She also caused 35 turnovers. 

• Maggie McDaniel earns second-team all-conference honors
Newnan graduate Maggie McDaniel earned second team USA Conference honors for her play on the lacrosse field.

The Piedmont College freshman midfielder led her Lady Lions with 15 assists and 52 ground balls. She also caused 31 turnovers.

She also earned the conference’s Rookie of the Week honors earlier this year. McDaniel, who is playing on Piedmont College’s first-ever varsity women’s lacrosse team, earned the honor with 13 points, including nine goals and four assists during a perfect 3-0 week.
