Lineups heading into heart of 2014 schedule

by Doug Gorman

It might seem like the high school volleyball season just started, but county lineups are about to hit the heart of their schedule — between the start of their region play and next Thursday’s annual Coweta County Championships.

Newnan was supposed to get its Region 3-AAAAAA schedule started Tuesday at home against Campbell and Douglas County, but a scheduling mix up forced the contests to be postponed until next Tuesday.

There have been plenty of early-season highlights this season. East Coweta is off to a fast start, pushing its record to 14-4 heading into the Thursday’s matches at home against Johns Creek and defending Class AAAAA champion McIntosh.

The Lady Indians finished second at the Sequoyah Classic early in the season and they also swept former Class A state champion Eagle’s Landing Christian.

Newnan is off to a 9-7 start, but the best news for the Lady Cougars has been the return of senior captain Tiffany Maes, who missed most of last season with a serious knee injury.

Despite having to reschedule Tuesday’s matches, the Lady Cougars won’t go the whole week without playing. Newnan stays home for non-region games against Our Lady of Mercy and Starr’s Mill befor playing its region makeup games next week and the county tournament next Thursday at Northgate.

A coaching change hasn’t stopped Northgate from getting off to a fast start in its quest to get back to the Class AAAA Final Four for the second straight year.

New coach Sheila Walker leads a streaking Lady Vikings team into this week with a 10-3 record while on a six-game win streak. It includes wins over Kell and Norcross in the Sequoyah Classic as well as a sweep over Area 4-AAAAA foe Union Grove.

Northgate is about to face another tough test this weekend when it travels to Atlanta for the Westminster Block Party.

By the Numbers East Coweta: Senior Jesse Bartholomew is again one of the leaders when it comes to kills. Through her first 38 sets, the senior, who has verbally committed to Duke to play volleyball in college, has 178 kills. Teammate Sydney Winters has 85 kills through 38 sets….. Dominique Ingram has 45 blocks and Haylea Mannebach has 20 blocks.

By the Numbers Newnan: Jenni Young has a knack of keeping points alive for the Lady Cougars. So far this year she has 130 digs. Senior teammate Maggie Darracott also gets into the act when it comes to digs, so far this year, she has 100…..Tiffany Maes continues to get healthy and has 43 kills and 26 aces.

By the Numbers Northgate: Savannah Moore and Taylor Richard each have 76 kills for the Lady Vikings through the early part of the season. Mackenzie Crenshaw among the team’s leaders in kills with 52…Lexi Rose and Jordan Scruggs each have 17 aces apiece.
