Newnan, Northgate each rack up 11 runs in tournament wins

Newnan and Northgate softball teams didn’t need any late-inning heroics to pull out respective vic- tories during Thursday’s Georgia Dugout Club tournament games.

The Lady Vikings routed Stockbridge 11-1 in five innings behind a seven-run rally in the third a day after needing a walk-off homer to squeak past Alexander.

Newnan, meanwhile, roughed up Carrollton 11-2 behind senior Tori Loveless’ 4-hit outing for the Lady Cougars second-straight victory.

The senior pitcher, who fired a four-hitter during a 12-0 rout of LaGrange on Wednesday, has gone 7-for-8 at the plate in her past two games.

Newnan plays a tournament doubleheader today at Whitewater starting at 4:30 p.m., while facing Ola in the nightcap. Northgate also has an early game against Eagle’s Landing at Carrollton at 5 p.m.

The Lady Indians who were off on Thursday following three games over consecutive games to begin the year, play Alexander at 4:30 p.m., and Starr’s Mill at 7:30.

Recapping Thursday’s games:

Northgate 11, Stockbridge 1: Cleanup hitter Alyssa Allen, who connected for a walk-off homer on Wednesday against Alexander, stayed hot at the plate by going 2-for-3 with another two-run home run in the victory that put the Lady Vikings ahead for good.

The Lady Vikings (2-0) stayed undefeated after erasing an early 1-0 deficit in the top of the first. After taking a lead for good on Allen’s blast off a 1-1 pitch, Northgate added two more runs in the second for a 4-1 advantage, and then put the game away with a seven-run outburst in the third.

The extended rally saw the Lady Vikings pound out five hits including a two-run double by Jessica Houk that scored teammates Reagan Kinsch and Jessica Cochran, who walked and singled, respectively. Allen added her final hit in the inning.

Senior Ebonee Echols had Northgate’s other hit in the third while finishing 2-for-2 with two runs and an RBI.

Kaitlin Bailey and Hadlee Lewis combined on a five-hitter, with each firing two scoreless innings. Bailey started and allowed a run on three hits with three strikeouts.

Newnan 11, Carrollton 2: Loveless, Lauren Ferguson and Katelin Richardson combined for nine hits in the win over the Lady Trojans, with Richardson connecting on a two- run homer.

Along with Loveless’ perfect 4-for-4 effort, Ferguson went 3-for-3 with a triple. Richardson finished 2-for-3.
