Lady Indians start year 3-1

East Coweta head volleyball coach Amber McClure understands that how her team ends its season will be more important than the beginning.

But it was still an impressive start for the Lady Indians on Saturday during a five-team playdate at Woodstock.

While match No. 1 of 2014 left East Coweta a bit more vulnerable against a Harrison team that has reloaded following a trip to the Class AAAAAA Elite 8, McClure’s lineup equally responded with three consecutive two-game sweeps over host Woodstock, Hillgrove and North Paulding.

“It was fun to see just the small improvements through- out the day,” McClure said. “Once it started clicking it was a pretty great day. I’d rather peak at the end of a season.”

Harrison, which was playing its second match when facing East Coweta, defeated the Lady Indians 25-14, 25-20.

The team responded by reeling off three straight victories, beginning with host Woodstock 25-20, 25-20, and picking up steam with a 25-18, 25-14 effort over Hillgrove.

East Coweta closed by dominating North Paulding 25-14, 25-14.

Senior Jessi Bartholomew led the offense with 37 kills while teammates Sydney Winters and Dominique Ingram chimed in with 19 and 14, respectively. Winters led the defense with 17 digs and Ingram posted a team-high 17 blocks over the four matches.

Setter Peyton Smith finished with 70 assists while Riley Padgett, Haylea Mannebach and Liz Schramm each contributed a team-high six aces.

Padgett also added 14 digs and joined Winters with five blocks apiece.

East Coweta, Newnan and Northgate travel to the annual Sequoyah Classic Invitational tournament this weekend.
