by Chris Goltermann

Cameron Daniel kept a title close to home as the Hurricane Junior Golf Tour hosted a two-day tournament last weekend at Canongate-on-White Oak.

The Newnan native and Landmark Christian student dominated the Girls 11-14 year-old division to claim her third tour victory of the season. Daniel opened with a 2-over 74 that included three birdies and finished at 153 for the two-day event for a 20-stroke victory.

Older sister Jordan Daniel battled back to finish fourth among a strong field in the Girls 15-18 division after improving her opening round by 10 strokes.

Jordan closed with an even-72 to pull into the top-5. After bogeying two of her first three holes on Sunday, she rallied with birdies on holes No. 5, 7 and 8 to make the turn at 1-over and then gained another stroke with a final birdie on the par-5 14th to finish even.

Norcross High standout Alissa Yang opened with an even-72 and stayed the course en route to a two-day 2-over 146 to earn the division title. Skyler Thompson of Buford was second at 5-over while Ivy Shepherd of Peachtree City placed third at 6-over for the tournament.

Northgate High player Jessica Houk finished in a tie for 15th in the 15-18 girls division.

In the 11-14 boys division, East Coweta freshman Carson Whitton finished tied for fourth following rounds of 78 and 79. Whitton is now headed for the US Kids Teen World Championship at Pinehurst starting on Thursday.

Several county players competed in the Boys 15-18 division led by Maddux Lytle’s 11th-place finish following consecutive rounds of 79 and 76.

Ethan Mansour of The Heritage School closed his final round at 8-over 80 to finish in a tie for 26th place with Northgate’s Chris Whitney among others. Whitney posted consecutive rounds of 82 and 81.

Newnan golfers Jaden Hall and Tanner Lee tied for 35th place with two-day totals of 167. Nate Meadows and Bernard Berry also competed among Coweta players in the 15-18 division.

VAUGHN QUALIFIES FOR GEORGIA OPEN: West Georgia freshman Carson Vaughn, a former standout at Newnan High, qualified for the Georgia PGA Open on Monday during a qualifying round at Berkeley Hills Country Club in Duluth.

Vaughn posted four birdies en route to an even-72 while tying for 12th among 69 players in the qualifier.

He now advances to the Georgia Open at Pinetree Country Club from July 31-Aug. 3. Locals expected to play in the event include club pros Ted Meier and Dave Schreyer in addition to Brandon Lovelady out of Canongate I.

US KIDS WORLD EVENTS AHEAD: While Carson Whitton of Newnan heads to this week’s Teen World Championship at Pinehurst No. 6 starting Thursday, others will begin play at the US Kids World Championship starting July 31. Local qualifiers include Teddy Dunn and Will Coffman.
