Area drivers get back on track after rainouts

It's taken a few weeks for the weather to cooperate, but the racing schedule is finally got back on track at Atlanta Motor Speedway's Thursday Thunder Series in Hampton after back-to-back rainouts.

For three local drivers from Senoia, that meant making the trek to Henry County both Wednesday and Thursday.

The busy schedule was worth it for former points champion Joshua Hicks, who turned turned in a second-place finish on Wednesday and a third-place finish on Thursday in the Bandolero Outlaws.

Tina Johnson also had a good week at AMS, racing twice in the Legends Master Division, and turning in two top five finishes. Johnson finished fourth in Wednesday's makeup race and second Thursday.

In one of the most entertaining races on Thursday, two hometown drivers battled for the second and third spot in the Outlaw Division with Ashton Winger holding off Hicks.

Neither driver could catch Jenson Jorgensen who has dominated the Outlaw Division.

Jorgensen has now won three straight races to take a commanding lead in the division's points race. Jorgensen led from start to finish both Wednesday and Thursday night.

In Wednesday night's race, Winger took fourth place behind Jorgensen, Hicks and Purdy.

Johnson's second-place finish was her most impressive performance of the season after she crossed the line behind winner Bill Plemons, Jr.

It was one of the first times, Skip Nichols Thursday Thunder's all-time winningest driver hasn't raced to Victory Lane this season in the Masters Division.

Nichols, who won Wednesday's race, settled for fifth .

Thursday Thunder reaches the halfway point of the 2014 season next week.
