US Kids Georgia State Invitational begins today at Orchard Hills

While the U.S. Open tees off at Pinehurst this morning, some of the top youth golfers around the state will walking the course at Orchard Hills during the first day of the 2014 U.S. Kids Georgia State Invitational tournament.

At least a pair of local entries will be competing in the event, which has boys ages 6-8 and girls 6-9 playing nine holes each day. The remaining age groups will play full rounds over both days.

The state invitational offers players the opportunity to qualify for regional, international, world or teen championships. Players qualified for the event by finishing in the top half of respective divisions during spring seasons.

Today’s field includes young golfers from Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee.

Representing Coweta are Teddy Dunn of Newnan in the Boys 7 year-old division and Andrew Garger of Sharpsburg in the Boys 10-year-old division.

SWORDS SECOND AT OPTIMIST EVENT: Newnan standout Annie Swords finished second in the girls 15-18 year-old division last weekend’s Georgia Qualifier for The Optimist tournament at BridgeMill Athletic Club in Canton.

With her two-day score of 157, Swords now advances to compete in the Optimist International Junior Golf Championships in late July at PGA National in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.

GSGA JUNIOR EVENTS START MONDAY: Local players are also gearing up for the Georgia State Golf Association’s respective boys and girls Junior Championship tournaments, which both begin on Monday.

The GSGA boys event is being held at Brunswick Country Club while the girls compete at The Standard Club in Johns Creek.

Northgate High’s Jessica Houk and siblings Cameron and Jordan Daniel, both of whom compete at Landmark Christian, are among the field in the girls championship.

The boys field includes Ethan Mansour of The Heritage School and recent Northgate graduate Maddux Lytle. A large field includes Sterling Dixon of Newnan.
