Watts new AD at Heritage School

by Chris Goltermann

The 2014-15 school year expects to bring its share of changes, from reclassification both in the Georgia High School Association and the Georgia Independent Schools Association, to changes in athletic personnel.

At The Heritage School, Nathan Watts, fresh off leading the Hawks to this year’s GISA Class AAA Final Four in boys soccer, has been named athletic director.

Watts, who also coached varsity football in addition to boys soccer, completed his first year at Heritage following stops at Smokey Road Middle and Our Lady of Mercy, where he coached soccer, football and basketball.

During the spring, Watts coached the Hawks boys soccer team to a 13-3 record in the program’s best finish since 2006.

He replaces longtime athletic director and head girls soccer coach Ron Rineer.

WADE JOINS STAFF AT OUR LADY OF MERCY: During his 21 seasons on the sidelines with East Coweta’s football program, Clint Wade squared off on many a Friday night against former Starr’s Mill head coach Mike Earwood during his tenure as head coach of the Panthers program.

This fall, however, they’ll be working side-by-side at Our Lady of Mercy in Fairburn.

Wade, who retired from the Coweta County School System last month after stepping down as Indians head coach following his final seven years in the program, accepted an offer from Earwood to join the Bobcats’ coaching staff

“It’s been a blessing. I hadn’t planned on doing anything specific when I retired. Mike got in touch and called me a couple of months ago,” Wade said. “I’m real excited about it. I’m like a porcupine in a room full of balloons.”

Wade, who went through spring at OLM, which returns to a Region 5A alignment including rival Landmark Christian, also joins a staff that includes former McIntosh head coach Glenn Griffin.

“I’ve got a lot of respect for those guys. Mike Earwood’s done a great job everywhere he’s been,” said Wade, who will be working with the secondary. “A lot of it is the same things we ran at [East Coweta]. It’s just learning the vocabulary. I’m really enjoying it.”

MCKELPHIN JOINS FOOTBALL STAFF AT NEWNAN: Newnan’s football program has added former East Coweta and Carrollton assistant Marvell McKelphin to its staff as the Cougars new running backs coach.

McKelphin spent the past 15 years at Carrollton coaching running backs under Rayvan Teague, Ross New and the late Ben Scott and was part of the Trojans’ state championship staff in 1998.

He coached football and baseball at East Coweta and served as an assistant principal at Newnan High for a year prior to arriving at Carrollton.

Cougars assistant Hap Hines, who has coached running backs, will coach tight ends this season in addition to becoming the program’s special teams coordinator.
