Newnan’s Hill runner-up in state high jump event

Newnan senior Josh Hill cleared 6-10 in the high jump, placing second in Class AAAAAA on Thursday. 


For the second consecutive week, an athlete from Coweta county helped set the bar in the high jump at the GHSA Track & Field State Championships.

Newnan senior Josh Hill was among three athletes that cleared 6 feet, 10 inches while placing as this year’s Class AAAAAA runner-up during Thursday’s field events at the annual Georgia Olympics in Jefferson.

Hill joined Bailey Vitatoe of Brookwood and John Paul Harley of North Gwinnett in a three-man race for the state championship in the high jump. Vitatoe captured the title based on attempts.

The Cougar standout matched a personal best from last year while finishing his track career on a high note. Hill won this year’s high jump at the Coweta County Championships at 6-6, a 3-AAAAAA title at 6-8 and then matched the effort while leading this year’s Class AAAAAA Sectional meet at McEachern.

Last week, East Coweta sophomore Aliyah Whisby finished as the Class AAAAAA runner-up in the high jump at the girls state meet in Albany.

Hill, however, wasn’t close to being the only local boys scorer in Thursday’s field events. Also finishing the year strong were East Coweta senior Dartavyous Walker and Newnan senior Stephon Brownlee, who both scored in Class AAAAAA.

Walker closed out his career with the Indians by placing sixth at 152-3, well ahead of last year’s finish. As a junior, the East Coweta standout tore his meniscus and was unable to spin in his windup.

“‘Dart’ did great,” said East Coweta head coach Trace Overton of Walker, who connected with his effort on the third of six attempts.

Brownlee placed seventh in the Class AAAAAA long jump in his final varsity performance. He soared 22-7 ½ on his first attempt after qualifying for finals.

Newnan junior teammate J.K. Britt was unable to advance in the Class AAAAAA triple jump while placing 13th at 42-8.

In the Class AAAAA meet, Northgate’s Drew Latham also placed 13th in the discus at 125-10.

The GHSA state meet continues today with running preliminaries. In action today among local qualifiers include Newnan senior Terrence Geter in the 100 meters, East Coweta junior Kevin Lashley in the 300 hurdles and Northgate’s 1,600 meter relay team of Logan Langner, Malik Wade, Jaelin Ware and Benton Washington.
