Goad to vie for state All-Around title tonight

For the first time in program history, the Newnan Gymcats won’t be competing as a team in the Georgia High School Association State Gymnastics Championships.

But a Newnan gymnast may be primed to still return home with some major hardware following tonight’s meet at The Westminster School.

Junior Sydney Goad could be among the favorites to win this year’s individual All-Around after placing third in the GHSA at last year’s state meet.

Tonight’s state competition begins at 7 p.m., and can be viewed with an online pass through origin.nfhsnetwork.com/channels/georgia.

Goad also took third in the All-Around at last Saturday’s GHSA state preliminaries after placing first on beam (9.55), second on floor (9.55) and runner-up on bars (9.6).

Performing at a high-level, however, is nothing new for the Gymcats standout.

The 17-year-old has followed in her parents’ footsteps as a champion weightlifter. In 2012 alone, Goad, whose first name comes from the host site of the 2000 Olympics where her mother, Robin, competed as a one-time world champion and world-record holder, Sydney set 18 American weightlifting record for her age group. It included multiple 44-kilogram marks at the Junior National Championships, Youth National Championships and Youth World Championships.

Challengers at tonight’s GHSA State Gymnastics meet include Lambert’s Katie Stuart and Locust Grove’s Kelly Aycock.

Goad and Aycock, a junior, battled in Newnan’s season opening meet with the Locust Grove standout posting a 36.925 in the All-Around to Goad’s 36.575. The GymCat’s effort included a 9.3 on beam despite a fall.

Stuart won a state title on bars last year while helping Lambert win an overall team championship. She placed ahead of Goad in the state All-Around and behind Tift County graduate Beth Roberts.
