Northgate rolls past East Coweta in Coweta Cup

The Northgate Lady Vikings lacrosse team built a 12-goal halftime lead en route to a 16-2 victory over rival East Coweta in Coweta Cup action at Henry Seldon Field.

Eleven different players found the back of the net for the Lady Vikings en route to the victory over the Lady Indians in a game that was played in steady drizzle.

Northgate and Newnan’s girls will now decide this year’s Coweta Cup title on Friday at 5:30 p.m., to open a doubleheader at Drake Stadium.

Both the Lady Vikings and Lady Cougars defeated East Coweta in its first games of the round-robin tournament.

East Coweta’s boys defeated both Northgate and Newnan to repeat as Coweta Cup champions.

The Lady Vikings never trailed on Wednesday, scoring early in the first half before East Coweta came back to tie the contest at 1-1. The hosts then closed out the first half with 12 straight goals and with its double-digit lead at the break assured a running clock in the final 25 minutes of the game.

Chaya Murrell, Abby Coe, Savannah Steffens, Korey Elliott, and Maria Smith each finished the contest with two goals for the Vikings.

Northgate teammates Brenda Robinson, McKinley Fohrman, Ashley Passantino, Amber Beatty, Abby Weatherford and Emily Sims also scored for the Lady Vikings.

Northgate played tenacious defense throughout the contest, with Katie Rollins leading the way with three steals.

Robertson, MacKenzie McCloud and Reagan Cluff added two steals each to help the Lady Vikings improve to 6-6-1.

The Lady Vikings’ Elliott also had a steal to go along with her two goals, and Fohrman finished with one steal.

Northgate used two goaltenders in the contest with starter McKenzie Peace playing the first half and grabbing a save and Caroline Cook playing the second half and finishing with five saves.

Sarah Reeves and Yehon Zhu scored for East Coweta.
