Newnan golf lineups sweep region titles

Newnan’s boys golf team won its sixth consecutive region golf title on Tuesday, finishing first at the Region 3-AAAAAA tournament held at Canongate-on-White Oak. Team members include Carson Vaughn, Jordan Henry, Max Matistic, John Taylor, Aaron Sweatman and Preston Wise.

A streak of region golf championships continued for Newnan’s program while another one may have taken root on Tuesday.

Either way, both lineups now headed to GHSA Class AAAAAA state tournaments following Region 3-AAAAAA championship efforts at Canongate-on-White Oak.

“I believe we are playing our best golf at the right time and have a great opportunity to be very competitive at the state tournament,” Newnan head coach Jeff Bryant said about the Cougars after his boys cruised to the program’s sixth consecutive region title by posting a school-record score of 297.

Douglas County was a distant second at 327 while East Coweta finished third at 338.

Senior Carson Vaughn, headed to the University of West Georgia on a golf scholarship, led Newnan’s boys with an even 72 among five players that came in with scores under 80.

Junior Max Matistic kept pace with Vaughn with a 1-over-73 while senior Jordan Henry, headed to Abraham Baldwin on a scholarship, posted a 2-over-74.

Juniors John Taylor and Aaron Sweatman were also steady with rounds of 78 and 79 while freshman Preston Wise also played well in his first region tournament appearance.

“Our two seniors, Carson and Jordan, along with Max have provided the leadership and steady play we’ve needed to play at such a high level this past month,” Bryant said.

The Cougars’ score automatically qualifies the team for the Class AAAAAA boys championship at Champions Retreat in Evans on May 19.

The Lady Cougars, meanwhile, made some history of their own while earning the school’s first region title for the girls program.

Freshman Courtney Lewis posted an 88 to lead Newnan’s girls to a team score of 309 among its three scorers. Haley Luna, Lauren Starnes and Hannah Johnson equally played well while holding off rival East Coweta by just two strokes.

“It was a great day for our golf teams, especially our girls,” Bryant said. “Winning the region championship for the first time in school history is something these girls will always remember. What a great way for them to leave their mark on the program.”

The Lady Indians’ score of 311 qualified the team for the Class AAAAAA sectionals. Both girls teams advance to the May 5 tournament at Heron Bay in Locust Grove. Cheryl Tobin led East Coweta with a 91 and Gabby Freed also contributed to the scoring.

East Coweta’s boys were led by rounds of 80 from Hamp Morris and Jimmy Sledd. Kyle Carter added an 84 for the Indians and an effort by John Vutale capped off the scoring.
