GymCats win meet, look to maintain state streak

Newnan High gymnastics team kept its hopes of continuing a streak of eight consecutive appearances in the Georgia High School Association State Championship meet alive on Friday by earning the right to compete in the upcoming GHSA state qualifier.

The GymCats turned in a season-high score of 101.575, well above the 96.0 necessary under new GHSA standards to compete in the upcoming qualifier on April 26 at Dunwoody High.

Closing out the regular season against Henry County, Ola and Pike County, Newnan’s three-member team put together strong individual efforts including Hailey Norton’s score in the final event on floor to seal the trip to the qualifier.

The GHSA state champion- ships will be held at Westminster on May 2.

Standouts Sydney Goad and Elizabeth Hovey finished 1-2 in the All-Around competition on Friday having also now quali- fied individually for the A-A at the GHSA state qualifer.

Goad, who has proven to be a contender for a potential state crown after finishing third in the All-Around at last year’s state meet, placed first in every event on Friday. Her efforts included a stellar score of 9.725 on vault while posting an All-Around total of 38.05. It came with an equally solid 9.4 on beam despite a fall.

Hovey finished second in the All-Around with 36.575.

Ola was the only other team to post a team score finishing second with 87.575. Miranda Rawlins of Pike County finished third on vault and floor and third in the All-Around with 31.95. Holly Turner of Pike County was third on balance beam. Ola’s Jessica Reiter was third on bars.
