Lady Cougars reach semifinals of Granger Invitational

Newnan’s girls tennis team picked up consecutive victories on Friday, including an elusive one for the program against host LaGrange, to move into today’s semifinals at this week- end’s annual Granger invitational.

The Lady cougars scored back-to-back 4-1 decisions over Lumpkin County and LaGrange, advancing to play Carrollton at 8:30 a.m. at Granger Park.

singles players Carly Griffies and Caroline Davis won both of their matches as did Newnan’s No. 1 doubles tandem of Olivia Dumas and Lollie Davis.

Victories at No. 2 doubles were split by teams of Ansley Knight and Claire Hanna against Lumpkin County and Emily Ferguson and Lindley Hudson in the win over LaGrange.

“That was big,” said Newnan coach Hap Hines. “We haven’t beaten LaGrange since i’ve been here.”

Newnan’s boys split its first two matches of the tournament, falling to Morgan county before rallying to hold off Rockmart 3-2. The Cougars will play Columbus at 11 a.m., in a match set for Troup High School.

The latter victory against Rockmart included a marathon tie- breaker at No. 1 singles in a loss by William Ballou that ended 18-16 just before 11 p.m.

Teammates Landon Goolsby and Mikey Miller earned respective 6-1, 6-1 and 6-0, 6-1 efforts to cap off singles play at the No. 2 and No. 2 positions.

Newnan’s No. 1 doubles team of Stewart Rand and Sam Thomas earned the clincher with a 6-2, 6-4 victory.

Goolsby had the Cougars’ lone victory in a tiebreaker against a tough Morgan County lineup.

East Coweta’s lineups were also competing in the tournament. Results were unavailable at deadline.
