Lady Cougars win opener at Marietta Tournament

MARIETTA - Newnan's tennis teams gave the tournament hosts all it could handle during the first of two days of the annual Marietta Tournament on Friday.

The Lady Cougars dominated in a 5-0 victory while Newnan's boys sent the match to a final tiebreaker at No. 2 doubles before falling 3-2.

'I was very proud of everybody's effort,' said Newnan tennis coach Hap Hines. 'We got better today.'

Newnan's girls were led by Carly Griffies shutout effort at No. 2 singles while sister Gray Griffies won 6-4, 6-4 at the No. 1 position. The Lady Cougars completed the sweep of singles matches when Caro line Davis captured a 6-3, 6-1 decision.

The Lady Cougars advance to play Norcross this morning at 10 a.m., while the Cougars will likely face North Cobb Christian at 1 p.m.

Newnan's girls also received a shutout at No. 2 doubles from a team of Ansley Knight and Ellie Waters. At the No. 1 position, Mollie Davis and Emily Ferguson came through with a 6-2, 6-2 victory.

The Cougars, meanwhile, were taken to the limit in a match against Marietta's boys that included two deciding tiebreakers. At No. 1 singles, Newnan's William Ballou arguably played his best match of the year while battling back in a 5-7, 6-2, 10-5 victory.

'That's the William Ballou we all know and love,' said Hines.

The matched came down to No. 2 doubles, however, where Dawson Ayers and Bennett Souter went ahead by a set before falling 6-4, 5-7, 8-10.

'Those two played their hearts out,' said Hines.

Newnan's other victory came from No. 3 singles player Mikey Miller 6-1, 6-1. Landon Goolsby dropped a 3-6, 2-6 decision at No. 2 singles while the Cougars' No. 1 doubles team of Sam Thomas and Stewart Rand lost 2-6, 2-6.

The Cougars were coming off a 3-2 victory this week over Heard County that included solid efforts from Thomas Touchstone, Jason Robeson, Robert Estes, Matt Paschal and Thomas Shulz.

Touchstone, a freshman, won 6-4, 6-2 at No. 2 singles while Paschal and Shulz won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2 doubles.

Souter and Estes lost a tiebreaker at No. 1 singles while Robeson lost at No. 3 singles.
