Swords wins Hurricane Tour event at Mirror Lake

Two of Coweta’s top high-school level girls golfers went head-to-head among a strong field at last weekend’s Hurricane Golf Tour Canongate Series 1 event at Mirror Lake Golf Course in Villa Rica.

Defending GISA Class AAA champion Annie Swords of The Heritage School rallied to hold off Landmark Christian senior standout Jordan Daniel and Johns Creek senior Janet Mao for a slim two-stroke victory in the 15-18 year-old girls division.

Swords closed the 36-hole event with a 3-under 69 while battling back from five-strokes down after Saturday’s opening round.

The Lady Hawks senior put together six birdies, three of which came on the front side to quickly move into contention. Swords, who made her second trip to the USGA Girls Junior Amateur last summer, posted a 2-over 146 for the two-day tournament.

Mao and Daniel were a stroke apart atop the leaderboard after Saturday’s first round. Daniel showed consistency with consecutive rounds of 73 and 75 but struggled on the backside on Sunday after posting birdies on Holes 4 and 6 to make the turn at 2-under.

Both Daniel and Mao, who was a teammate of Swords for Team Georgia at last summer’s GSGA Georgia-South Carolina Junior Challenge Match, finished with two-day totals of 148 at 4-over.

Ivy Shepherd of Peachtree City was fourth at 7-over while Ashton Thompson of Sharpsburg was 10th.

Daniel’s younger sister Cameron, meanwhile, finished third in the girls 11-14 year-old division with a two-day score of 167 led by an opening round of 82. She finished the tournament with two birdies.

Lee Middle School student Carson Whitton placed 13th overall among 30 competitors in the boys 11-14 year-old division. He opened the tournament with an 82 and finished with three birdies over two rounds.

Maddux Lytle was the top local boys finisher in a deep boys 15-18 year-old division while tying for 20th among 43 entries. Chris Whitney of Sharpsburg and Nate Meadows of Newnan also competed in the division.
